Please join me on a visit to one of the world-s most beautiful locations, set in New Zealand-s scenic Fijordland. The trip starts out along the awesome Te Anau to Milford Sound road with jaw dropping scenery around every bend, towering mountains, pretty rivers, mirror lakes, distant snow fields, moody skies and gravity defying trees clinging to vertical rock faces, wherever the eye roams the scenery entices admirers to take a closer look. At the point where the razor sharp mountains carved by ancient glaciers appear to finally defeat the road construction crews we dive into the cave-like, unlined 1. 2 km Homer Tunnel, emerging to a vista that has to be seen to be believed, before zig, zagging our way down the steep mountain road, with enticingly named photographic lookouts beckoning travelers to stop and capture every scene for posterity. The road levels a little as we follow the very Welsh sounding Cleddaur River to the Milford Sound jetty car parks. Leaving the camper-van behind, we follow the quirky wooden walkways to get our first glimpse of what has become the subject South Island-s most iconic photograph -Mitre Peak-, the ever present sound of the cicadas serenading tourists in the warm sunshine and the jaw dropping scene greeting visitors has to be savoured for a moment or two before moving on to board one of the many pleasure boats waiting to take tourists on a cruise of the fjord. Almost immediately after departing the jetty we are treated to yet another highlight -the Bowen Falls-, vast quantities of water crash down into a fairy tale scene with emerald green trees surrounding the white mist emanating from the water crashing down the rocky mountain face. We cruise through Milford Sound, emerging into the Tasman Sea having past more waterfalls, some so high they look like sea mist descending gently onto the surface of the fjords translucent green waters. Finally we head back into Milford Sound, stopping of at the -Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory- where visitors can actually go under the water to watch the natural marine life and learn why the darker coloured fresh water forms a layer on top of the Salt water from the Tasman Sea. Just as a point of interest the area is often described as the most seismically active zone in New Zealand. Map at

Thanks Tim, you did abetter job than the BBC slow TV trip. Pity you can't do a few more around here, Love them all. P. S. you don't have to edit these trips, just make them a bit longer. Pete on the Isle of Wight.

Yes did this trip in 2012. It doesn't matter how good the video is you have to see it in person to appreciate the size and majesty of it all.
