The F40PH diesel-electric locomotive was the mainstay of Amtrak's long distance and corridor train motive power fleet for nearly two decades. With the last F40s withdrawn from service in 2002, what happened to the locomotives that were not recycled for scrap? In this video, I will go through every single Amtrak F40PH locomotive I have seen since their retirement and take a look at their post-Amtrak locomotive career. We will be discussing units that made it into preservation as well as those sold to other railroads. In addition, we will go through the roster of locomotives that Amtrak retained for conversion into cab control cars

My Favorite facts about 231 is that in it's Amtrak Life it was the Operation Lifesaver F40, it's retired life was Painted into Daylight Colors cause it was The Powercar For 4449, tho I Haven't found Photos Of it in Daylight in the Daylight Consist but I have when it was still in Phase III, I am sad it's Been moved to Nevada cause I've always seen it at Ogden, UT, but I've heard it will Go back into Phase III with the SDP40F it was with In Ogden and I hope they give 231 ot Operation Lifesaver Nose back on it.

Hello Mike,
Once again a superbly presented and highly informative video, thanks. Being a Brit, and essentially a British steam enthusiast, much of your terminology is unfortunately lost on me. For me, it would therefore be very helpful to have some kind of -Glossary of Terms/descriptive phrases- that would enable me to expand my knowledge so as to appreciate your excellent work much more. Again, thanks

Kool.
Ontario Northland Railway in North Bay Ontario Canada bought 2 ex Amtrak F40's back in 2018/19 and numbered them 220 and 221 as APU's for the Polar Bear Express trains. I'm not sure what their original Amtrak numbers were though. ONR uses them as APU or EGU's for HEP supply to the coaches. They have no motive power or baggage space, just HEP supply.

AMTK F40PH 308 and F40PHRs 310, 370, and 382 were purchased by Metro-North, rebuilt to F40PH-3Cs, and renumbered to 4909, 4910, 4907, and 4908 respectively. These units still run strong on NJT and MNCR trains out of Hoboken and compliment the other GP40s on both railroads along with NJT F40PH-2CATs 4119 and 4120 and MNCR F40PH-3Cs 4911-4914 which are ex-NJT units.

Just Because Amtrak Still has F40ph Passenger Diesel Locomotive that doesn't mean that they are converted into non powered control units that didn't happened to Amtrak's f40 they are still passenger diesel Locomotives and not Cab Cars!

406 has been rumored to be getting ACSES installed in it to run on the Downeaster (because any train that goes on MBTA property must have a locomotive w ACSES lead. Crossing my fingers that it-s true.

Another former Amtrak F40PH that is preserved is 311, which used to operate on Virginia Railway Express as VRE V35. V35 is also preserved at the North Carolina Transportation Museum, right?

Looks like Caltrain will be using their F40's for just a bit longer. Yeah, electrifying the line is definitely the right thing to do, but it'll still be sad to see them go.

NPCUs that were never mentioned:
90200
90222
90225
90413
Some others might have mentioned these units already, but I-m not exactly sure though.
