-CoasterFan2105 So the Feather River canyon has lots of railroad tunnels here. With freight trains being on the Feather River Canyon, first they circle through the mountains, they spin around a loop and slide down, they pass the tunnel, and they can use any rail bridge over the Feather River, regardless of BNSF or UP to cross the river.

Stunning footage and wonderful action Mike, and fabulous scenery! It's so rugged and I don't think I'd be wanting to be around there in winter time! Do you -camp out- when you're shooting these images? Although I'm a steam engine fan I can still appreciate diesel power. Thanks once again for a great video. Ken from Scotland, UK.

For a long time, certain freight trains, including intermodal trains and auto trains had to use the feather river canyon route due to low tunnel clearances on the donner pass.

The original California zephyr used the feather river canyon route, but Amtraks version of the California zephyr uses the donner pass for its regular route.

Freight trains have a choice of using the feather river canyon route or the donner pass route when traversing the Sierra Nevada's.
