After seeing this, everyone should understand how vital drones are to addressing emergencies, especially in mass emergencies like a bad earthquake. They would be essential to identifying need and delivering accordingly. And drones could be used to deliver search-and-rescue bots that try to find people trapped in rubble or in mining shafts and such. We should be using SO many drones in these cases, and they should all be capable of acting like phones for the police department and/or rescue workers in order to instruct children or anyone who doesn't know what to do about where to go or to just stay where they are. They could actually fly through broken windows and call out to see if anyone can hear them and shout back, or use infrared technology to see what human rescuers could never see. I would love to see them acting autonomously too, like little friendly robots that kids won't be scared of. They could deliver water or food or set up a rope ladder or initiate calls to the child's parents using existing publicly available knowledge of the parents' phone number based on the residence's location.

Two questions come to mind; the first is what happens when the rescue workers need silence to listen for sound from the rubble and a drone is buzzing away overhead. Drones are pretty noisy. Second, how was the audio sourced? For example when the rescue workers are running with a stretcher and people are applauding and cheering, what audio are we hearing? Was someone recording on the ground? Is it generic / foley sounds? On the face of it this is stunning documentary work, but it does leave me wondering about a few issues.

I lived through this but my memories are blurry now. I just remember chaos, chaos everywhere. I lived nearby a very affected zone (Roma, Condesa) and it was like a war zone and a video game. people on the streets, ambulance, the military, I just felt scared and alone, only a few months since I moved. I had my (new) friends and roommates there but we were all scared.
I can't remember how the city got through or what I did during those days.

Its amazing how people in the time of crisis will come together to help others. I had cousins there that had almost been caught in a collapsed building and had escaped before it would partially collapse. This happened in the Biggest city in the World, it can happen anywhere and soon, it will happen again but to a different nation and set of cities. Preparation a key and unity is power.

We live in Jojutla, which was also devasted by the earthquake, our house had to be taken down because it was badly damaged. Mexico could be anything you want, we can have a lot of crime but something no one can doubt is that we are a country that comes together when we are at times of trouble. This was beautiful!

I went on to live in one of those buildings at 7: 38 a year later. The busted open one was demolished and rebuilt fairy quickly soon afterwards. While living in one of the buildings (which all survived 1985) I experienced 2 small earthquakes, which were only 5 or 6 point something on the scale but bloody scary!

I remember watching this on the news. What they people did that day is nothing short of heroic. This is what drove me to want to go into robotics as a career. I want to develop rescue robots so that if this happens again the rescuers will have an extra hand.

This isn't really how they used the drones. I have so many questions! How soon after the earthquake did they decide to film? How did they get permission to fly into the sites? (Especially since most of the rescue missions needed complete silence)
