HAVEN SHEPHERD, now 17, was a 14-month-old baby when her Vietnamese parents triggered a suicide bomb that killed them both but left Haven alive - though she lost both legs below the knee. Her parents set off the bomb in protest because they couldn-t be together; they-d had an affair and Vietnamese society wouldn't accept a baby born out of an illicit relationship. Haven was put into a shelter because her biological grandparents couldn-t afford to pay her medical bills. At 20-months-old, Haven was adopted by the Shepherd family from Carthage, Missouri. The family encouraged Haven to be as active as possible and she-s never felt ashamed of her stumps or prosthetics and says she is blessed to have the life she does. The year 2020 was meant to be one of the biggest of Haven Shepherd-s life. The 17-year-old para swimmer was set to qualify to compete at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. But thanks to COVID-19, Haven-s Paralympic dreams are on pause. Before the pandemic broke out Haven would train at the pool seven days a week, pulling double sessions on weekdays. The rest of her schedule was packed with schooling, CrossFit and ice baths. Now Haven, in Carthage Missouri, uses her relative-s backyard pool to swim laps. The teenager remains focused on making the Games 2021 and beyond that has hopes of making it in the modelling industry - she-s already appeared in campaigns for Tommy Hilfiger adaptive wear and swimwear brand Jolyn

She just amazing, an inspiration to other girls her age, On another note she was adopted from another country which is great, it does not matter what color you are it who you love, but I Iive in an area of Canada with a large native Indian tribal people, and some of them were raised by those not of the same race as them, but now they are very angry, saying thier culture was taken away. I do not understand, this sweet girl in the video has a kind loving family who encourages almost anything she puts her mind to. And yet Canadian natives who were adopted as children have nothing but hate in them and demand millions of dollars from being taken way from thier people. I realy dont get it.

I'm with her, strength, perseverance, intelligence and, of course, beauty. All of the qualities that make up the perfect human being. We could learn a lot from her. This she learned from loving parents and sisters. We could learn a lot from them too. You see, our petty differences are just that, petty. All of us should see each other as they do, family.

She is lucky and should be grateful to have loving and care adopted parents. Mine was worse. They adopted me was not pure because of love but, they just wanted to exploit me. Now i live in traumatized, having ptsd, panic attack, and depressed. Sometimes life is really unfair. Some people are really lucky, some are really unlucky.

I wish I had her confidence. My parentd completely neglected at a young age and never felt love. Therefore, I did not love myself. I admire this woman and it highlights the importance of having loving parents. I hope I can fill this void of missing love because I feel on the edge

I-m in swim team to and a lot of boys in my class make fun of me but if I like it that is all that matters. And it might be a weird sport but it is really fun and I am really good but she looked even faster then me! I love the conference for yourself. And I look up to you! - -

Not to detract from Haven's story but this is also a testimony to the importance of women's rights. Had her mother been able to divorce her husband, the bombing never would've occurred and Haven would still have her biological parents.

Their is no stopping this girl! She can do anything she wants. She is very pretty. I glad that she was adopted and grew up here in the states and that her parents never tried to hold her back.

She may be from Missouri, but she doesn't have a -show me- attitude! Her adoptive parents are also great role models for her!
