When reading the tittle a lucky escape, I imagined someone was escaping and luckily found something interesting on the way getting away. After watching the news, I see nothing related to escape, but a rescue situation.
What does the word escape mean in this case??

The idiom be none the worse for something means not to be harmed by something. I think the old man felt not to be harmed by his unpleasant experience.
