Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Contains images that some viewers may find distressing. First transmitted in 1961, a young David Attenborough goes on a search for the strange creatures that inhabit Madagascar. David and his crew witness the local ceremony where the graves of the dead are opened to much fanfare. Its a form of ancestor worship in order to secure a good harvest next season and to bestow luck and prosperity on the family

I respect Attenborough's presentation of how this is just the way things were done - and are still done? - in Madagascar. On one hand, he subtly expresses ambivalence at how these ceremonies wipe out a family's finances. On the other hand, he points out the social and cultural expectations that demand it - and the stigma attached to NOT doing it. Attenborough's comments raise questions - and then answers them.
This is how we learn things. Again, thank you BBC.

If this procedure is done in order to entertain the spirits of the dead, why are the dead bodies brought out? They did say that the spirit gets (is) out of the body and travels about.
