Macaques have learnt to use the sea low tide and rocks to their advantage in order to have a seafood banquet. sterling: I don't think using tools should be considered a sign of intelligence. Considering the fact that even birds have been known to use sticks and stones to accomplish certain tasks. I think manipulation of tools to make them more usefull is a more accurate sign of intelligence. In other words. Shaping stones, sharpening sticks, or combining multiple objects. Using tools is obviously the first step, but it doesn't make you any more intelligent than a crow. There is a certain species of Monkey that actually picks specific rocks that work best for cracking nuts. They don't actually shape the rocks, but they do understand that they need a specific shape so that's on the right track.

This isnt a tool according to anthropological standards. The rock is simply picked up and used. It isnt shaped into a more adequate form to be used in a particular fashion, like stabbing the shell or prying it open.
Thats why stone hand hammers are tools, while stones are not.
