Elephant Herd Celebrates a New Born Calf BBC Earth

A new born elephant baby brings joy to the elephants herd. Kimberly: Based on the location listed (Tsavo in Kenya) and the African gentlemans green coat and his statement about grandfather, Im guessing this may be video of a formerly orphaned elephant who was rescued, rehabilitated, and released into the wild by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, who then brought her wild born baby back to show her keepers. The formerly orphaned elephants frequently bring wild born babies back to the orphanage and reintegration centers to show them off and the keepers refer to them as grandchildren. DSWT is a 40 year old organization that does truly amazing work and if you dont know about them already, check them out. Not only do they rescue orphans, they have a mobile vet unit, an anti-poaching unit, and work with the local community to address root causes of human-elephant conflict.

I think he reads their behaviour wrong saying it's almost as if they want us to be part of the celebration. Not at all. Quite the opposite. What they are doing is herding the newborn away from him. They surround the cub and face the cameraman with their ears wide open, which is a defensive posture, forming a protective circle. In fact what they want is being left alone. Like most animals do, especially when they are vulnerable. (And this is a man who goes about putting tags and cameras on wild animals for a living. Please leave them alone. How would you feel if someone you don't know or care about tagged you or your family )

Only because of this did I learn that elephants secrete from their temporal glands. a quick search on Google reveals we dont understand much about why they do that and what function it has. How interesting?

What's not to love about elephants? The way they protect their young and grieve their dead is remarkable. Every time I watch them my eyes start to water.

Why does the BBC insist on putting their talking head big fat face on screen, when that valuable space could be occupied by the subject of the film.

I seriously doubt they want thieving murderous humans to be part of their celebration, as you claim. You should not be anywhere near that baby!
