Elephant Mother has Calf Stolen by another Female BBC Earth

Two female elephants fighting over a calf puts the baby at risk, until the grandmother intervenes. Annemarie: No use having good intentions about being caring and sharing when you were a poor orphan yourself who neve got the chance to breed and have no milk for the baby you stole. But some human women still try to do this, though I doubt that they are poor orphans. Maybe women who wanted babies but could have none or they lost theirs. We don't hear much about the mentality of human female baby steamers and what motivates them. Envy and hatred of the mother, or simply coveting the beautiful child, like women might desire a beautiful dress in a store and then contrive to steal it, if they cannot have it any other lawful way. Interesting problem.

I know a lot of people are going to hate the orphan elephant. But this is a direct result of the danger poaching elephants and other animals can do. To the orphan she is trying to help care for the child because other orphans had to do the same for her. The event of her parents dying and whatever difficulties her upbringing had could be a result of PTSD since elephants are one of the few mammals to show this behaviour. Its all sad

The dispute was settled far more peacefully than I would expect with an attempted kidnapping. They just shoved each other and it doesn't look like they were very upset, it was almost like they were nudging each other, and some of the gestures almost looked affectionate. Are we sure the mother wasn't just begging the other female to babysit for a while so she can have some time to herself lol

These ellies look thin.
But i am more familiar seeing African elephants on WildEarth
formerly called Safari Live.
They are currently live 2x a day.
through April's Covid 19 lock down.
I'm hoping with continued support they might continue past April.

To everyone curious about the fate of the calf - The full documentary is called Natural World: Sri Lanka - Elephant Island, and the story is continued at around the 52 minute mark, depending upon which video you watch.

Ok. Now. Please upload a REAL video of the calf and the mother(s) and just say they are all safe and happy or whatever. Curiosity and distress is killing someone here.

A bit like barren women who try to convince teenage single moms that they are not enough for their children and that they will be better mothers than the real moms.

I couldnt imagine being pregnant for 2 years and then someone else comes in and takes my kid. Its amazing they were able to capture this on camera though.
