Ideas like liberty, freedom, and self-determination were hot stuff in the late 18th century, as evidenced by our recent revolutionary videos. Although freedom was breaking out all over, many of the societies that were touting these ideas relied on slave labor. Few places in the world relied so heavily on slave labor as Saint-Domingue, France's most profitable colony. Slaves made up nearly 90% of Saint-Domingue's population, and in 1789 they couldn't help but hear about the revolution underway in France. All the talk of liberty, equality, and fraternity sounds pretty good to a person in bondage, and so the slaves rebelled. This led to not one but two revolutions, and ended up with France, the rebels, Britain, and Spain all fighting in the territory. Spoiler alert: the slaves won. So how did the slaves of what would become Haiti throw off the yoke of one of the world's great empires? John Green tells how they did it, and what it has meant in Haiti and in the rest of the world

Honestly I feel like presenting such a reduced condensed version of history can do more harm than good. There was so much more to Toussaint than just a guy who -wasn't actually that popular-. You can at least put some references and further readings in the description. You can at least -mention- CLR James's Black Jacobins, the most important book on the Haitian revolution, one of the most important history books period. I don't know why I'm writing this about a 7 year old video like it's gonna change anything, but KIDS WATCHING THIS, THIS VIDEO IS NOT NEARLY ENOUGH PLEASE READ THE BLACK JACOBINS

How, especially when mentioning the currently poverty or their place in 'new world' independence movements, did he not mention boycotting/sanctions/lack of formal recognition of a country against haiti by most of the (slave owning) western world, or the the insane debt Haiti had to pay france until EXTREMELY recently. like literally in debt for hundreds of years the right to not be a slave.

As a Haitian, I will admit, what happened after the Revolution was pure evil. But I think if you ask any Haitian, would they rather be the Mecca of the Caribbean vs Being Known as the first Independent black nation, I am sure we would rather the latter. We are not people conditioned to see wealth over dignity. Our pride runs deep. We are very spiritual people, so we rather be

How could the free people of color have slaves? Like that could be your family members or it could-ve been YOU. Your half black. I mean having slaves in general was just unspeakably horrific but how could u if ur mixed with some of those genetics in your body? Have you no mercy? ugh

I was born in 1985 and there was never a point in time that I heard any single person say slavery was not that bad. I'm sure it happens but I don't think it necessitates a whole chunk of the video.

Really good content except for the sprinkling of crappy lame jokes.
You probably think you're really funny.
The 'jokes' detract from the content. A lil annoying tbh.

Great episode! I wish you had talked about how Haiti had to give reparations to france for slavery. With inflation in today's money it is over $21 billion.

All this fancy(magical devils) western story telling that bewitched the whole world into marrying her. We adopted language and started interacting
