Hank resists the urge to devour a slice of pizza so that he can walk you through the way we experience our major special senses. It all boils down to one thing: sensory cells translating chemical, electromagnetic, and mechanical stimuli into action potentials that our nervous system can make sense of. Today we're focusing on smell (olfaction) and taste (gustation, which are chemical senses that call on chemoreceptors. As usual, we'll begin with a quick look at how these things can go wrong. Pssst. we made flashcards to help you review the content in this episode! Find them on the free Crash Course App!

-Hey I just got these new flowers, don-t they smell wonderful! - Family member
-What are you forgetting? - Me
-What are you talking about. oh yeah sorry about that. -family member
-Please just remember you almost never do- Me
The family member is my mom. She-s been my mom for my entire life.
It can be so annoying when this happens.

HANK GREEN! DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO WATCH A MAN WITH A SLICE OF PIZZA IN HIS HAND BUT STILL HAVE TO CONCENTRATE ON STUFF I'M SUPPOSED TO LEARN! 'Course you do. this is probably better than being able to smell it and not eat it lol

Interestingly, I heard in my physiology class that the amount of things you can smell is controversial. So it-s safe to say you can smell at least 10, 000 upward to 1 trillion different kinds of smells!

Is it a sign from god that I was ogling my pizza as I thoroughly enjoyed the smell and flavor when you said the smell and taste of pizza is what makes life worth living?
reply

But how do tastebuds and axons work in converting smell to brain language frequencies and waves? This video just points at parts and gives them names.

Question: Are receptors on the gustatory cells chemoreceptors?
Question: Are receptors on olfactory sensory neurones chemoreceptors?

reply

I agree. Its sort of silly that between animations he didn't take a single bit. I agree it's hard not to take a bite of pizza.
reply

Technically, isn't there only one sense: the sense of touch?
All of your other senses work by some kind of contact with a stimuli

reply

Actually I don-t have theses information I read Neuroanatomy but I continue to watch the video bcs Your explanation deserve watching
