Please take our PBS Digital Studios Survey! Today, we-re going to take a look at how computers use a stream of 1s and 0s to represent all of our data - from our text messages and photos to music and webpages. We-re going to focus on how these binary values are used to represent numbers and letters, and discuss how our need to perform operations on larger and more complex values brought us from our 8-bit video games to beautiful Instagram photos, and from unreadable garbled text in our emails to a universal language encoding scheme

Can someone please explain why at 6: 39 that represents the stated number? I only get the integer part but not how all those numbers represent the floating point. How is 10001000 the exponent? 10001000 is 136, its not 10 to the power of 3 or 1000. And how is the larger 23 bit number the significand? In what respect? People have to stop assuming when they teach. And what function in the computer does the multiplying of the exponent by the significand?

I remember taking a beginner's computer science class back in 6th grade (1994) and dropped out because my teenage brain thought it was boring. I wish I had developed an interest back then now that I can objectively see the impact computer science has had in our collective society.

Math is associated with social changes
In decimal
1 cent values 1cent, 1 bread values 10 cents, 1 cake values 10 breads, 1 pizza values 10 cakes and so on.
In binary
1cent values 1cent, 1 bread values 2 cents, 1 cake values 2 breads, 1 pizza values 2 cakes and so on.

Wow, this video was rubbish. You just basically rushed through hours of material, trying to speak as fast as possible to fit it all in a 10 minute video. Also -mojibekay-? You could have done a little effort to learn how to pronounce a single foreign word properly.

1 KB (kilobytes) = 1000 bytes (10-3)
1KiB (kibibytes) = 1024 bytes (2-10)
Due to confusion computer architects have now defined a new term -kibibyte- to represent powers of 2, whereas the -kilobyte- represents powers of 10.

You ignited my interest in csci again! I was seriously consider dropping my csci intro class because my teacher is really disorganized and doesn't know how to teach. You've given me hope!

So this episode is talking about data type, right? Discuss about how to represent different types of data in binary, using different encoding formats to represent different types of data.

The asian keyboard shown in video is taiwanese computer, the mainland keyboard is same as english since we have already imported alphabet system to mandarin while taiwanese don't.

Awesome video, best I've seen so far. Question though, how does Unicode only use 16 bits if it includes every language ever used? Seems like a small number of bits to use?
