How to Make a Resume Stand Out: Crash Course Business - Soft Skills #5 Jabberdau: 1969:
My father: -Hey you got a job? -
An employer: -Sure! When can you start? -
My father: -Now? -
An employer: -You' re hired! -
2019:
Me: -Hey you got a job? -
An employer: -I need 5 years proven work experience, a certificate of criminal record, 3 references and access to your private social media accounts. Also you must be a friend of someone who already works here to be hired, your written CV must cover your entire life yet not be over a page long and have absolutely perfect spelling and design and the text must at least be on par with a work of Shakespeare. -
Me: -Are you kidding me? For an entry level job? Is there anything else I should know? -
An employer: -You must be availible at all hours 24/7 on call, all days. Pay will be minimum. There will be no training, no overtime payment and ofcourse no benefits whatsoever.

-No one knows what synergy is. Every businessperson says it, but what is it? -
Oh see, I can answer this. Because unlike the host, I actually hold a highest honors business degree (finance. Synergy is when the sum of two entities is greater than their combined value. It often reflects the additional value unlocked via mergers and acquisitions.
-Sprinkling in a little black girl magic-. I've said it before and I will say it again. Stop using this language. This is inappropriate for any business firm, and will get you a talking-to by HR. I'm beginning to feel you are not qualified for this position.

There's an important point about culture also that is not taken into account. Different employers expect different things. And personally, I wouldn't like to work at a place that obsesses too much with personal characteristics, my life is my life. I'm a programmer, so what you (the employer) should worry about is how knowledgeable I am at coding, and how well I can do teamwork. That's the essence of what makes me a good programmer, and the essence of why you should hire me. If you want more, then perhaps you don't want the best programmer but something else, in which case I can't help you.

I work in IT, and was also recruiting a lot. I have 17 years of experience and I keep my resume one page. It is loaded with information, but it is still just one page, and it is tailored for the position that I apply for. What it means, everything that is not relevant is not included (or very briefly. Once I got a resume for a junior/mid position that was 10 pages long, I felt so offended by it (taking into account the amount of time I had to process it.

If the application don-t ask for it don-t then don-t bother with the cover letter
This is an already outdated and useless concept (maybe Americans like it for these very reasons though)
Just choose a proper degree, be happy with a small salary for the first 2 years and don-t waffle on your resume
That-s it

Would you say that having ZERO social media presence is a net negative or a net positive? I'm asking because having to edit and prune every post on every platform linked to you, which is highly dependent on the job being sought, sounds like a chore of colossal proportions.

The hardest part for me is the references, not because I don't have people to ask, there are plenty of people that would be happy to help me, BUT, asking someone to say nice things about you is so hard, is like nails in the blackboard of my mind

If you don't know synergy, look it up. It is a cool word. Also it is a useful word describing the essential functions of two independent agents interacting. As a buzz word maybe it is overused, but it is really descriptive and interesting.

Alright Eve. I've also heard it and as far as I can tell, synergy means the ability to work with people so well, that you're far and beyond the point of optimisation. I think. English isn't my first language

The thinly-veiled self references are tiresome. Okay, we get it, you-re talking about yourself. Are you trying to help us or self-promote? I had no idea who you were until this series.
