Ma'ui, Oceania's Hero: Crash Course World Mythology #31

In which Mike Rugnetta teaches you about Ma'ui, prominent hero of many cultures in Oceania, aka the Pacific Island nations. Ma'ui is just the kind of hero we're interested in here at Crash Course. He's a culture hero, he's a an adventurer, he has a divine birth, AND he's a trickster. In short, he's pretty cool, and the tasks he accomplishes in his life are great examples of how human stories can touch on universal themes

This was very well done! As a pacific islander, how you explained the Myth of Maui was fairly accurate.
Like growing up with nothing but polys around me, i first heard of Maui in kindergarten/primary - The Maui is a prominent figure in Maori culture, so naturally here in NZ is grow up knowing about Maui - then you realize that there are scattered stories of this character throughout the Pacific.
The NZ/Fish story and how he slowed down the sun i've learnt from Maori Mythology. One thing I would like to see here and see is your research on Tagaloa/Tangaloa who was, what is described to be -GOD- before Christianity swept through the Pacific. The stories of old from the Pacific would be lost, for most a huge part of its record keeping were through song and sayings. But sold video! Always making that good content!

I've lived in Hawaii most of my life. I've taken 3 years of Hawaiian language. I've never once seen it spelled Ma'ui in Hawaiian or any other Polynesian language. It's Maui. Rename your video. The ' is called an 'okina. It is a letter and it changes the pronunciation and meaning of the word. If you spell it Ma'ui it is a completely different word.

in maori stories he tries to gain immortality by crawling up the vigana of the goddess of death and out her mouth reversing the process of birth but his friend a bird laughs so hard waking the goddess up and crushes him to death becoming the first mortal

Please correct the spelling of Maui in your title. It's wrong makes you look like you're lazy or don't care to spell the main topic of your video correctly. This puts the whole content and supposed expertise of your video into question.

Maui did not pull up the entire island on New Zealand. He only pulled up the North Island or -Te Ika A Maui- (The Fish of Maui. The South Island of New Zealand, however, is called -Te Waka A Maui- (The canoe of Maui)

Maui. The island. While myth on that. In my history class. growing up on Maui makes it fundamental. Talking to the the sun and tasing the island of Maui and it also being being the house of the sun as well.

I am assuming most of the people watching this are doing so after they have watched Disney's Moana. Are Te Fiti and Te Ka from Disney made-up goddesses? I couldn't find info about them online.

I don-t like how he talks about Maui as if this is what all the pacific peoples believe, in New Zealand we had a different version of Maui who-s stories are very different

(In reference to Mike's post-credits comment) Ant-Man may not have the most power in Marvel but his abilities are very useful and were necessary for the time heist to work.

So Ma'ui tried to get 'inside' of a giant goddess to steal her heart. does that mean he was the world's first macrophile?
