European exploration had a lot of side effects. When the Old World and the New World began to interact, people, wealth, food, animals, and disease began to flow in both directions. In the New World, countless millions were killed by smallpox, measles, and other Old World diseases. Old World animals changed life in the New World irrevocably, and the extraction of wealth and re

In Latin America we have the conception that english conquerors were more brutal than the spanish. Latin America is a mix of both cultures, the aztec, inca, etc + the spanish, after some years the spanish settled in the new territory and started families with the aztecs, all aspects of mexican culture (food, music, ways to see the world) and our physical looks is the mix of both worlds. English did not do that, they killed the natives and did not started a new nation rooted in both worlds. I'm shocked about the bias in the US thinking english were -kinder-.

It should be noted that Bartolome de las Casas is a bit of a mixed bag morally speaking. While he did fight to protect the rights of Indiginous peoples in the Americas, he was also a staunch advocate for the African slave trade (as an alternative to indigenous slavery.
Admittedly, he did change his mind later in his life and apologized, but several prominent historians have proposed that his ideologies heavily influenced several European monarchs in their decisions to send slaves to the American continent.

-(these animals) arriving in the New World for the first time. -
Hate to be the insufferable -well actually- dweeb, but this is kind of a cool story. Horses are native to North America, and migrated to Eurasia when the Bering Land Bridge was a thing. That's good, because they died like the mammoths and giant ground sloths when humans first arrived in the Americas. So the land bridge prevented their extinction long enough for someone in the Caucasus to learn how to ride one, and the rest is history.

other comments seem to be months ago (I'm late as usual, but anyway. Fascinating episode BUT haven't we strayed into New World history here? I get the empire-building and devastating, horrible impact on international populations (nevertheless, a bit 'PC' in perspective. Back in Europe, 95% of people not affected by global empires yet, more concerned about the fall of Constantinople and the terror of the Ottoman/Muslim threat. and the sacking of Rome in 1527, not given enough coverage generally.

As an ex-dutch colonial country citizen, I think dutch preserve their colony native culture better than the british and spanish or portugese. We still speak our language, practice our own faith, and preserve our cultural identities.
Maybe because the dutch only cares about making profits instead of the other 2 Gs in Gold, Glory, and Gospel thing.
Or we are just too populous that they can't just wipe us out like in North and South america?

2: 55 John is not just referring to all kinds of brazillian wood in general. He is referring to a very specific wood, called -Brazil Wood-, which is where the country gets it's name from! The wood was said to be -red as ember-, so the portuguese called it Brasil (meaning -like ember-.

-I-ve always found it very funny that the two most famous Italian sailors in history are named John Cabot and Christopher Columbus. -
Only in the English-speaking world. In Spain and Latin America, for example, everyone knows -Christopher Columbus- as Cristobal Colon.

Beautifully done! Wonderful speech at the end about the impacts of history and it's results as we live them today. This is excellent material for filling knowledge gaps for teachers.
