The end of the Napoleonic Wars left the great powers of Europe shaken. Judging from the destruction that had been wrought across the continent, it seemed to the powers that be that the Enlightenment had liberated the people, and led to disaster. So, everybody got together in Vienna to have a Congress, and to try to put Europe right again. By right I mean they wanted to go back to the old days of kings, queens, and nobles running the show. But this new yearning for the past pervaded the continent. Roomanticism arose at the same time, looking back at (imagined) golden age of Medieval Times. Today we'll talk about the Congress of Vienna, The Holy Alliance, and the Romantic movement across the arts

0: 35 this is a completely false characterisation. Britain already had all of those things in our charictaristically moderate fashion and peasantry hadn't really been a substantial class since the industrial revolution and had been done away with. Peasantry had only been a class on paper for about 100 years before then. The Congress was to prevent the nationalist and liberals from revolting for at minimum autonomy and constitutionalism respectively

obviously im going to point out the major error of france still being in control of the german provences and the lowlands, even though they were all given back to their previous owners, as goes for chunks of french colonies going to britain (india especially. pretty major error considering the fact that this gave britain a huge boost and the ability to eclipse its colonial rivals.

Balance of Power concerns go back to at least 1688, when the League of Augsburg formed to oppose France's expansion because it would upset the balance of power. Then one of the reasons France and Spain were willing to back the American colonies (and nobody was willing to back the British) was because British victory in 1763 had tilted the balance of power too far in favor of the British.

I guess it makes sense to develop a Great Man concept after Napoleon did so much for no particular reason other than his own personal ambition. And to a lesser extent, the dictatory arbitrary rule of the people who preceded him like Robespierre or succeeded him like Metternich also emphasized the power of a -great man's- whims.

So what your saying is that today's socialism is in essence the ruling class bucking against the exercise of individualism on the part of the middle class. It makes sense when upon the observation that the movement of socialism in thos country is backed by the elitists.

The human experience cant be understood through reason and rationalism alone thats why romanticism was a thing Romantics werent against being rational but they realized it by itself wasnt sufficient.

Wow, this is truly the most mind-opening episode for me. You can really see the seeds of what becomes our own reactionary extremism and social revolution in this day and age.

Id point out tho that even liberals then wanted monarchy like the french revolution wasnt wholly anti monarchist at the start radical were the ones that wanted a republic.
