we take a look at variable frequency drives to understand how they work in electrical engineering and power electronics. We look at where and why to use a VFD or VSD, alternating current, direct current, single phase, three phase, frequency, rectifier, DC bus, inverter, capacitor, pwm, pulse width modulation

Hello sir I need cloosed loop baterry 12v lead acid to variabel voltage supply for me delco 12 si alternator I experiment lot with engines I use often amplifier ignition and hv ceramic capacitors so called plasma ignition but the unusual effect is that the starting charge on those old alternator goes up meaning I constantly back fead true the bulb unless I rev me engine more and the bulb goes off.
So culd you advice me what to do?
Shuld I use cloosed loop voltage supply and how much current and voltage is normal for those alternator regulators?
Also I have problems with xenon bulbs, dual filament bulbs and interacting multipel relays to back feading alternator what diode type shuld I use to prevent undesired effects?
Me alternator does bypass the integrated diode in the dashboard but still I think those ceramic capacitors might interfeare with ground potential on the alternator regulator.
So I only use the pin 1 bulb the pin2 suposedly is the sence pin but its bent inside the alternator case.
So I hoppe also if you culd point out where to put diodes on relays I use hella relays 2 pin buzzer, 3pin blinker, 4pin read defroster winscreen, 6pin wiper motor relays.
Im doing currently entire wire harnest in the car its classic Opel from the 80s.
So in the past I hade unusual problems like engine self aceletating when I turn lights on, or when blinker relay has corrosion on ground rear bulb holder and some black wire on key ignition starts to burn the engine behaves like Hit and Miss engine like some buzz coil so does the engine work in union with the blinker relay, also some times I get static chock and many times I end up with flat baterrys under charge or over charge the baterry.
So I hoppe to finde some thing manuali that can tell the alternator when to charge and at what rpm range also I must finde solution for those relays stoping them to do that strange staff and posibly controler or dimner circuet for xenon bulbs.
So I hoppe you understand me problem and can give me good advice.
Also I wuld like to avoid useing the car chassys as ground due to rosting problems those cars normali have so I hoppe there are virtual grounding circuets.
I have bunch of those mentioned relays so I wuld like to seperate them or at least control to some degree those anoying problems.

I am a commercial hvac/r technician have been doing hvac/ refrigeration for 6 years love too learn new things want too get a bachelors in mechanical engineering and continue too grow my knowledge I have now been promoted too a facility manager position but kind of like the field more thank you for this explanation love all your videos great knowledge! Have worked on 3 phase motor control panels that send power too centrifugal suction end pumps 7. 5 hp and 10 hp condenser and chilled water pumps for 2 racks of 100 tons of cooling each rack with 2 compressors in tandom and the 3rd on its own circuit. Also have a cooling tower we replaced the 25hp motor Baltimore also float switch repairs for fill valve of the condenser water great stuff did many commercial hvac service calls too many different hotels and facilities country clubs fascinated by hvac and mechanical ventilation and heating as well as kitchen equipment heating elements ovens.

Thank you for tge great graphics and discussion of the topic. I want to acknowledge that while there are a great many things that require good engineering to make a VFD work good, I think motor position sensing is important enough that it should have been included. Sadly that part is often neglected on similar videos, and I'd like to see how it's done electronically without hall sensors.

My mental capacity was at peak crumbling from being frustrated and burned out for hours just before I met this video.
The semester exams kept knocking at my door.
I was almost in tears as I tried to keep seated and watch in this dead of the night.
This video was like a shot of an anti-anxiety medicine.
I couldn't wish for more than this.
You're an angel.

So a friend of mine is from Paraguay which uses 220 50hrz single phase for residential. He has been living here in the states and is moving back for a while and would like to take his expresso machine along but due to the 50hrtz system is afraid too. Will it work to hook up a Vfd to get 110 60 hrtz from 220 50hrtz SP?

What if a frequency drive, say, 11KW, has more amps written on the side of it, lets say 60A, than the motor needs, lets say 40A, or your electrical circuit, 40A, allows?
Does that mean the drive pulls 60A for the motor, or does it mean the drive can pull up to 60A before it starts screaming for mercy?

Question. So a permanent magnet fan motor like on a mini split is a true DC motor? Voltage in AC then rectified to smooth DC but not inverted? But and lets say an ECM fan motor or a variable speed compressor are 3 phase AC motors that are inverted? But I know those are permanent magnet motors also.
reply

It would have been good if you would have used the bridge rectifier diamond shape circuit to explain rectification. Makes it a bit interesting to understand.
All in all well explained. I cant believe I saw this video once before and didn't realize it was linked to inverter ACs.

However, PWM ultimately is a signal that can have similar power or perform similar works to a sine wave, but it is not the same as a sine wave, is it? The graph of the output signal is essentially a repetition of DC pulses with varying duty cycles, not a sine wave, right?

I feel smarter just watching this video, ive seen the magic boxes that turn 240 2 phase into 208 3 phase, etc but now i know whats going on in there its not so magical.

God Tier teacher!
I work in a trade school and sometimes it's hard for the students to get a grasp of the material, but these videos explain everything so clearly!

Such a wonderful explanation. I clearly understood. but only one thing that is how the output voltage working. u said it controlling in igbt switch. please let me know.

4: 00 magnets don't push or pull electrons, the changing magnetic field causes an electromotive force which in result creates current.

Rockwell makes an awesome drive that can use the rotational energy in industrial systems to dump energy back into the mains voltage.

In a past I have heard, that if some electric device, lets say a motor will be connected to 60Hz instead of 50Hz, it will burn. So?

am from uganda and am so interested in this teaching leasons about vfd and am picking up slowly slowly, very nice explanation

Bahut sahi hai VFD 1 question please tell me EVERY AC VFD HAWA BUS CONNECTION CAN I GIVE AC VOLTAGE THAT CONNECTION TO RUN VFD
reply

what is the output of vfd sir ac or dc? I hope you will notice my question sir and get an answer, thank you!
reply

Thankyou so much. Only question is have is why are the cans so large compared to the actual device inside?
reply

can i have the names of some of yhe tools you use in your videos like the oscilloscope meter and the prices
reply

Modern full flux vector Inverter drives can have full torque at zero speed just like a DC motor drive,
