Democratic Elections in the European Union [Swedish]
video description
-3: 36 -Lemino: - -The European Commission is the government of the EU- -Facts: - No. The government of the EU is composed of 3 institutions: Commission, European Council, Council of Ministers.
-4: 12 -Lemino: - -The European Council choose the head of the Commission, who is confirmed by the Parliament. - -Facts: - Yes and No. According to the constitutional texts, the Council merely proposes a candidate for head of the Commission, and the Parliament then elects or not this candidate. This is what happened in 2016 (election of JC Juncker, but not in 2021.
-4: 03 -Lemino: - -You vote for your national parliaments, whose members contribute to form a national government, whose head is member of the Council, who -chooses- the head of the Commission. This is INDIRECT DEMOCRACY! - -Facts: - No, this is not -indirect democracy- because the national member of the Council is not elected as member of the Council in a election dedicated on European matters. He/she is elected as head of national government, not member of the Council, in a national elections focused mainly on purely national matters. An institution composed of members who happen to have a national mandate is different from a democratic institution, whose members are elected precisely as members of this institution!
-4: 30 -Lemino: - -So 2. 5 of the 4 main EU institutions depend on the member state governments- -Facts: - Which means that 2. 5 institutions have not been elected for a European mandate! And the Council of Ministers has not been elected at all! Ministers are appointed, not elected! Thats not a detail, thats important! Prime ministers are not present when the ministers vote.
-5: 15 -Lemino: - -Compared to national parliaments the EU parliament cannot propose laws. - -Facts: - Yes and No. The Commission has formal power to propose a law. But in reality, 1/3 of the laws originates from the parliament, 1/3 from the Council, and 1/3 the Commission alone. Also, the European Parliament is only the lower house of the. ahem. Parliament. Yes, the name is confusing but the EU Parliament (lets say: -legislature-) is composed of two houses: an upper house (Council of Ministers) and a lower house (called Parliament for some reasons. IMPORTANT: this means that our laws are voted by the Council of Ministers, whose members are appointed (not elected) after a national election mainly or only focused on national matters, to be part of the executive (not the legislature, and are finally part of both the executive and the legislative of the EU!
-5: 30 -Lemino: - -Right now the members states pretty much control the EU. There are two approaches: giving more power to Parliament, or giving more power to the members states- -Facts: - NO, NO, NO and NO! The national governments are not institutions of the EU! The European Council and the Council of Ministers are institutions of the EU. I know, members of the Councils are also members of the national governments, but national governments and the EU Councils are not the same thing! Thats not just semantics, thats important! If a national government does something bad on national level, the national parliament can force their government to resign. If the European Council or the Council of Ministers do something bad. well, we can do nothing. Theoretically, a national government could force their national members of the council to resign, but good luck with that! That will never happen! Especially considering that it would not be an individual member who would have done something bad. It would have been a majority of member of the Council! Imagine the majority of national governments resigning? It. will. never. happen.

I feel like the benefits of a consolidated and indirect system of government are overlooked; namely that leaders are more free to make long term decisions as they're less subject to the ever changing whims of the people, and they're better able to get things done faster than they could with all the extra bickering that politicians who are about to be reelected do, which is what caused so much chaos in the US when our senators went to direct election instead of state appt.

I am from the Czech Republic. It is said that Czech is one of the most difficult languages in the world. And we are also said to be the most atheistic nation in the world (great to have Poles as neighbours. But when I listen to Swedish, I thank God for providence for sparing me from learning the grammar of that devilish-sounding language.

The EU parliament can't propose legislation.
The EU comission is unelected.
The Euro destroys the economies of nations other than Germany and the Netherlands.
The EU court of justice is a political court, commited to pushing the federalist, integrationist agenda of the EU.
The EU is a threat to democracy.

I love people and I'm usually super positive about their motivations and capacities. I'm usually very intolerant of any blanket negativity about -people-.
But when I start thinking about politics and governments I want to drink myself to death immediately.

Sweden is not something to strive for. They are being raped and beaten by the refugees they tried to help.
And they somehow are in denial about it.
