The Lost Colony of Roanoke After watching the History Special Roanoke: Search for the Lost Colony (you have to pay for it now -, where they reanalyze the First Dare Stone, I became convinced of its validity. A modern expert in Elizabethan English, pointed out obscurities which could not have been known in the 1930-s. Anyway, if you haven-t seen it, I would definitely check it out, it-s well worth the $4.
But my disagreement with you on that particular point notwithstanding, it was so incredibly refreshing to hear someone tell the tale of the Lost Colony, as not happening in a vacuum. The 1585 Ralph Lane Expedition, and especially how it ended, is so vital in putting the colonist-s disappearance into context. It shows us how that expedition had already left an extremely bad taste in the mouth of the Indians towards the English, long before the John White-Roanoke Expedition had ever left England. For my part, it definitively points to the slaughter of the colonists, as being the most logical and common sense explanation of the mystery. It also reinforces my view on the First Dare Stone-s veracity, as the picture it-s narrative paints falls in line with that conclusion.

Three most likely to me:
1) they abandoned the place and went to a nearby tribe, joining them and that is why european looking native Americans were spotted in later ventures near the colony.
2) They went to land and attempted to find safety, only for a good few to die on the way and be attacked by the locals, who were understandably furious for the massacre done to the chief and the villlage, the survivors either dying, joining a tribe or two, or joining the spanish colonies and not being willing to return to the colonies.
3) There was a very bad storm and flood, which may have killed a large portion of the people if they were out doing things like digging for clams or attempting to reach the mainland on a hunting party, the survivors then fleeing and choosing to lay low, perhaps out of shame that from hunger they may have cannibalised each other or done something similarly unspeakable.

Man, most of the available versions of the story have so many mistakes and simplifications in them! Once you know all of the facts, it's still unsolved but not a great mystery really. I mean, there obviously isn't anything supernatural or unexplainable here, even though the details are fuzzy. Thanks, there was a legion of facts here that I never saw in any of the popular accounts of the events. Beware of simplified mysteries, I guess.

When I was in graduate school, some of my fellow students would make videos of this quality as an alternative to final thesis papers. It was a really good option for students who have great difficulty writing standard 60-page research papers, and the point of the assignment is still achieved. It would be great if similar options could be applied to public schools here in the U. S. Kids might actually try.

Here's something you never heard before. Captain Blackbeard actually was killed at now Okracoke Island, back in the day Ocracoke was named Hatrass Island, but even before that it was Croatoan. So I'm wondering if blackboard actually wrote something in his account if he saw anything that dealt with life or colonial stuff left there? Anyone have any guesses?

I've been to the outer banks several times, it's cool to learn about some of its history. It's interesting to me after learning who they were that the Manteo part of Roanoke island is much more populated and touristy than Wanchese is, which is just a small fishing village off the beaten path.

My family is from SE NC. We grew up being told the Lumbee Indian Tribe are the product of the colony's survivors and eastern tribes like the Croatan. The federal government won't recognize them as Native Americans because of the inability to trace their history and roots.

Hello. Are you still able to check the credits for the subtitles translators. Because when community subtitle feature was still allowed I was able to check the credits. So I-m wondering if the content creator can still view it. If yes, can you please share it. Thanks

It will forever amaze me that it was a long, arduous, dangerous journey across the Atlantic not that long ago. Now as I type this there are tens if not hundreds of thousands of people traversing the entire globe by sea, land, and air. It-s wild!

I actually got to speak with someone who is a direct descendant of the lost colony. She confirmed that half went to site x, while the other half went to the hatteras tribe. Her family was from that tribe, a mix of native American and English.
reply

By the way, none of this is in Virginia! All of this is in present day North Carolina. Many North Carolinian-s think they went to live with native Americans. It-s also suspected that the fire was a signal from the colonists.

The colony moved from Roanoak to Croatoan this much is obvious. They salied across the ocean to find out where the colony relocated too and never followed up on going there bcus of a -Anchor- issue thats b. s
reply

What? It wasn't safe to sail to the incredibly close island without the second anchor so they sailed all the way back across the Atlantic abandoning any potential survivors including his daughter and granddaughter

Does anyone have that link to the video from around or before 2012 made in MS movie Maker about 6 minutes long about the lost colony of Roanoke that had Enya- Only Time playing over it for the first half?
reply

I feel likenthe colonist probably didnt set up exactly on site x, just somewhere nearby. This is so frustrating considering archeologist cpuld be off by a few miles yet at the same time so close.
reply

Hi - I thought I read that DNA from some members one of the indigenous tribes, Native Americans what is compared The DNA remaining members of that one family who lives in Great Britain

You are doing a good job with both the research and the animation. Very interesting and always at least some info I have never heard before, even in a story I thought I was familiar with.

the 3 guys developing severe depression after returning to the colony after a long day of wood gathering and finding the town empty with a full fleet of ships sailing away
reply

why did they leave the outer banks (14: 58? They could have at least drifted around the Croatoan island and shouted out to the colonists without any need of an anchor
reply

I-m over here trying to figure out what happened to these people and this guy added more mystery to the mystery by asking the question why was everyone named John
reply

Personally, I think the -X- was the intended spot to move to as White mentioned, but he probably covered it up since they hadn't done so yet when the map was made.
reply

The Government has got this guy, no uploads for year's, we must seek the truth, he leaked too much information and now he's been silenced, we must help him.

As a German i find this very funny, because there is a German rapper who is named cro, and funnily enough, he hides his identity behind a panda mask.

I've been to Roanoke massive mosquitos/horse flies. Very few trees. Overall weird vibes there. Like the island just wants to be left alone.
reply

25: 28 same as with cp i cant get over the fact someone knew Gay meant something but still went and gave it a new meaning.
reply

I used to work in an archive and let me tell you, -why was everyone named John? - was a question I asked myself daily
reply

What's crazy is I watched a video earlier on this topic and the details are very different. Not sure what's real anymore
reply

it amazes me how good people were at creating maps and being able to estimate distance like what 50 miles inland is
reply

They massacred natives. such a mystery as to what happened to colonists. What could possibly have gone wrong?
reply

Moving to a foreign land and calling its inhabitants -Savages-? Yeah I hope they all met a brutal end.
