Napoleon\'s Marshals: Suchet, Ney, Soult. Joao: A small anecdote: two infantry regiments of the Portuguese legion were in Ney's corp at Vitebsk, Smolensk, Borodino, Krasny during the breakout and retreat of Ney's rear guard; Portuguese remains were found in mass graves meant for battle casualties around Krasny. A testament to the brutal fighting, and Ney's obstinance. The Portuguese, for their part, earned their legions of honour and, more importantly, Ney's praise, while having earned Oudinot's and Napoleon's praise and awards in the German campaign and battle of Wagram. Davout was also a fan, hosting dinners for Austrian nobility soon after Wagram and presenting some Portuguese officers as the brave Portuguese of legends; something that seemed to entertain the Austrian noble women. don't ask me why.

Wow Marshal Ney is so inspiring. I wonder if those soldiers who fired on him had regrets about taking the life of one of the greatest Marshal's in Frances history. I am also surprised that all of the commanders did not vouch for Ney and want him exiled rather than shot. Maybe he had already burned too many bridges by that point, but I love his candor and outspokenness, telling those royals off. I would be pissed as well if those royals disrespected my wife while they were not even in the country or helped with the fighting.

Thank you for shedding a new light on Marshall Ney. The posterity (including myself) is quick to judge Ney as a traitor. But he must have gone through great personal anguish navigating his way through a politically and morally tumultuous period. I cannot begin to imagine the kind of mental turmoil he would have had trying to determine which ideology (revolution / monarchy) to serve.

If someone doesn't know Napoleon's allowance was 25mln francs per year - same sum as Louis's 16th 2 minutes before his attempt to escape and beheading. Josephine after break up - 3mln, marshall's basic is only 40 000 but favourites had 1mln overall. Murat's biggest part of wealth was coming from great admiral post - 330 000

Suchet was a professional administrator of men and what's rare for post-revolutionary french officers, seemed to be civilized towards traditional invaded people. Winning hearts and minds is the only way possible when there's thousands of angry peasants trying to slash open your throat.

Ney is my favourite. He sounds a bit like my sister, the kind of person you want beside you when shit hits the fan. Unfortunately the same stubborness that in a crisis makes them such a solid rock to cling on to makes them insufferable in normal every day life.

Ney survived! He escaped to the US. I'm sure many of you have heard of that conspiracy theory. Ney was a part of Freemasons group, along with the Duke of Wellington. Wellington made sure Ney survived and shipped him off to the US

He could have plundered the land, impeded the harvests, and walked away with wealth. Instead he protected and respected us. As an American of Spanish decent I thank you Suchet. Your actions will never be forgotten.

10: 40 this moment has stuck with me for a while and its honestly remarkable. I think modern military leaders could learn a thing or two about dealing with hostile occupations from Suchets example.

Suchet is just S rank, brilliant, independent, compassionate and loyal, all traits most of Napoleons generals lacked in one form or another. The perfect corps commander

Ney was the first Marshal I heard of when learning about Napoleon. He was larger than life and when I learned how he died it really saddened me. What a loss for France.

Berthier lived in Switzerland or Bavaria and never went to Belgium with Bourbons.
And was accidentally pushed off by some men in green uniform from the balcony

Napoleon said that Soult knew hot to locate troops but when action started becomes confused. While Massena comes to senses with a first round being shot
reply

Napoleon: Okay guys, heres the plan. Murat, right flank, hard & fast. Ney, along the high road & wait for my command. & Soult? Smash.

whenever Bernadottes army of the North is mentioned I get chills. Such a fascinating time to be alive and the stories it led us to tell

I have fought 100 battles for France and not one against her - Marshall Ney. What a legend and what a leader. A truly brave man.
reply

Suchet's kindness to the Spanish and his effectiveness at counter insurgency makes him one of my favorite marshals
reply

Ney is a top 3 Marshal. With all due respect to Jean Lanne. He died so early on He missed so much of the War
