This video contains extra interview footage from our shoot with Prof Tom Shippey, and is best watched after you've seen the main video, 5 Great Viking Deaths (And What They Tell Us About the Viking Mindset) cristian: You guys should just do a complete documentary series on the Vikings. You will without a doubt get an offering to be a major show on TV.

We rode the rivers of the Eastern trail
Deep in the land of the Rus
Following the wind in our sails
And the rhythm of the oars
No shelter in this hostile land
Constantly on guard
Ready to fight and defend
Our ship 'til the bitter end
We came under attack
I received a deadly wound
A spear was forced into my back
Still I fought on
When I am dead
Lay me in a mound
Raise a stone for all to see
Runes carved to my memory
Now here I lie on the river bank
A long, long way from home
Life is pouring out of me
Soon I will be gone
I tilt my head to the side
And think of those back home
I see the river rushing by
Like blood runs from my wound
Here I lie on wet sand
I will not make it home
I clinch my sword in my hand
Say farewell to those I love
When I am dead
Lay me in a mound
Place my weapons by my side
For the journey to Hall up high
When I am dead
Lay me in a mound
Raise a stone for all to see
Runes carved to my memory
To my memory
To my memory

The Norse believed that they would go to a hall of a god/goddess who was the patron of the class to which the dead person belonged to. Warrior elite who mostly believed in Odin went to Valhalla while low born usually went to Thor's hall. Yet in all cases they would first go to Hel were all the halls were the dead would go to resided including the Valhalla as well. The main proof is the part in Egils saga which goes:
'From Norway king's keeping,
From craft of Gunnhilda,
So I freed me (nor flaunt I The feat overbold,
That three, whom but I wot not,
The warrior king's liege-men,
Lie dead, to the high hall
Of Hela downsped. '
Egils saga 45.

Awesome extra footage. I would be fine with you giving us every moment of recorded footage you have of Professor Shippey, talking about anything. He is a delight to listen to and learn from. His lectures must have been great to be a part of. I hereby officially request more interviews with Professor Shippey. :)

I wonder what snakes they managed to get to fill the snake pit with if it really happened and the only real native poisonous species in England at this time was the common adder. Those Saxons must have filled the pit to the top, poor Ragnar.

Once the Napoleons Marshals series is over would you consider delving into some of the famous coalition commanders. I feel like that is one part of the Napoleonic era I know little to nothing about but am still fascinated by

Thormod the Poet survives, not his fault.
Probably how Thormod felt about the whole thing, surviving a great battle if on the losing side would be bad, the Valkyries would deem you a coward.

I miss your battle videos, epic ones like Alexander's battles or Napoleon's. Please do the same with one of the most legendary kings of England! Maybe Edward the III, the 100 year war?

You should make a series about modern greek history
from the greek indendence war in 1821 at least to the end of ww2 and the ''civil war'' with the communists

Nice vid, made me more interested on this topic. Heard a bunch of tales of Harald Hadrada's exploits but never heard before that he was a poetry snob!

He could project the Bear.
He projected the Berserker he employed.
Being more of a gold man himself.
