Back in the fourteenth century, Mansa Musa was the ruler of a West African Empire and was said to be worth more than double that: around 400 billion dollars by todays money, accounting for inflation. Such wealth is often hard to imagine, so for context, this figure is the same as the national gross domestic product of Norway. Musa was so wealthy that his lavish gifting crashed a regional gold market for a decade, and quite literally put him and his empire on the map. Much of Musas early life are lost to history, but what we do know is that he was born around 1280 AD in or around the Mali Empire, and ascended the throne around 1312. Lets find out more about how his bizarre life as history's richest man!

If the Mali Empire could send thousands of boats off into the Atlantic Ocean looking for Americas, why didn't Mansa Musa sail a fleet of those boats up the African coast into the Mediterranean Sea, instead of dragging all of that stuff across the damned Sahara Desert? You would think the richest man in the world could do better. Evidently he was either dumb as a rock or the idea of the Mali Empire having a seaworthy fleet is a myth.
Maybe you clowns that believe the Mali Empire were explorers of the world's oceans should try a voyage using the same type boats as the Mali Empire had, and sail across the Atlantic using ancient Mali navigational knowledge.

He did sell African slaves to Arabs, it's estimated that the Arab slave trade was up to 10x larger than that of the Atlantic slave trade, which again this empire had it's hand in selling African slaves to Europeans and was the main culprit for both the Arab and Atlantic slave trades. It's also highly speculated that the slave trade was actually how he amassed such wealth, yes he controlled the salt trade, he had lots of gold, but he also had 5 percent of the world's population in his domain. Just showing the other side of the coin.

This is the history and civilizations racists say africans dont have lmao. They're hilarious. We can add to Mali empire, Axum empire which was considered one of the 4 major kingdoms and trading powers on earth of its time, the other 3 being, Persia, Ancient India and Rome. This was said by Mani a persian philosopher and scholar of the time. Stop reading public school history books, they taught us our history started with trans Atlantic trades and before that, we were doing nothing. Learn the truth

I see that everyone is full of praise and awe for Mansa Musa and even my fellow Africans who are eternally triggered by the subject of slavery are not moved to the usual fervent rants by the mention of more than 12, 000 slaves at 4: 30 If this was an American President or European King you lot will be foaming at the mouth in anger. Salutes!

I believe you did it so the Arabs in North Africans wouldn't come Rob them it's hard to pay broke people to sacrifice their life for your riches when they have enough money to do whatever they want and then all of that governments together basically had to make them broke again before they tried to get them to invade

How do you know Jeff Bezos was the wealthiest man in 2021? He was just the wealthiest man from all the ppl that were alright with being on that list. I cant even watch your video to the end, because you already made a mistake after 16 seconds: DD Now Iam just wondering, how many mistakes you made in total.

Manza Musa may claim to be the richest man in history, but every upper middle class 21st century person lives at a higher standard of living. Mansa Musa doesn't' begin to have many of the luxuries an upper middle class person has today. And we are not even talking about the billionaries of today.

The wondrous buildings he built were nothing but piles of mud with piece of wood sticking out. If a fleet that big had arrived in the Americas, there would be some evidence. He wasted his life believing in lies. The only reason he's even remembered is the gold they had at their disposal.

Hajj is based on the trials and tribulation of Abraham and his son Ishmail.
Africa knew hunger and woe when europeans came. only other time was natural disasters.
Who is the european version of Mansa Musa? Guess they too busy freaking out, winter is coming

Everyone bogging up this chap as being a generous philanthropist but no mentioning that he was a slaver, slave owner and on his Haj took 16, 000 slaves to carry his wealth. We not talking about that fact because of his race?
reply

You really think that was the richest guy ever? With this logic any dictator or king ever is worth their countries GDP. Queen of England puts this guy to shame. Putin. United Arib iterates. This guy is soft an light.
reply

12, 000 slaves! He was a slave trader. Paid passage not to be ambushed going to Hajj. Obligation to build mosques. Just a rich man nothing special save his wealth. Richest man couldn't build a two story house.

Not the world's richest man! Just sitting here in my living room with my iPad, internet access, music on demand, TV, 2 cars and a shop full of tools I have much more than this guy ever had.
reply

Really, this man is way poorer than Bezos.
Bezos can practically use his fortune anywhere in the World with much less restriction for way more advanced things.

reply

There is plenty of evidence that he landed in South America! They have ghanan gold, even Christopher Columbus said there were tons of black people already here.
reply

Mansa lived his faith truly in great contrast to Europeans who pillaged, enslaved, committed genocide and steal BLACK people's inventions in the name of Christ.

I theorize that this is very likely how the slave trade made its way to West Africa, the old tactic of using religion as a syringe to inject colonialism!
reply

Completely skipped over that Timbuktu was the largest slave trading market in the world's history.
Can't be letting facts destroy a narrative though.

reply

So what? Did he build a city? No. Any remaining legacy? Nothing. He just collected the gold laying in the ground, and carrying it to Mecca. So what?
