In this video I will be going over the first half of the history of LEGIO X from Baetica, who earned their place in History through their great efforts and loyalty to their general. It's hard to talk about Roman History without mentioning Julius Caesar, just like it's hard to talk about Julius Caesar without mentioning his famous 10th. How this man grew to such reputation and wealth in one of the most critical periods of European History is largely credited to the battles he won. What is overlooked, however, is the men that stood by him in these battles. In particular, a Legion that constantly spearheaded into battle ahead of the rest, and anchored entire battles in his favor, is the 10th Equestris; the Legion that Caesar and the other legions were glad to have by their side no matter how bad the situation. I would greatly appreciate any support you would like to give this channel, as it will help me create more quality content for you in the future!

At the battle of Pharsalus Ceaser apparently asked for volunteers from the Centurinate for a special mission 50 centurions volunteered including Crastinus ( primus pilum) these 50 were impregnated into the legion facing Pompeys 1st legion which was his best legion. they were to hit this legion hard and fast and hopefully cause it to wobble and rout. this along with his 3rd line of infantry placed behind his 1000 cavalry on his right wing were his surprise battle plan. Ceaser knew his small cavalry force couldnt win against Pompeys 7000 but he also knew they would crash together and stall and be stationary for a while allowing the legionaries with spears ( pilums) to crash into them and frighten the horses

The production quality of this documentary is amazing. The narrator. Production. The music. Oh the music. It works.
And the size of these battles are of a scale that many do not realise. For example that battle between the Romans and the German King. The battle front was in excess of 4 miles wide. It would take a horse at full gallop over 3 minutes to run from one end to the other. On perfectly flat terrain. When you realise this. You then really appreciate the skill of the Roman's. Their Millitery Maxim, Command structure and their General Caesar.
Thank you for making this.

The Roman's especially under Caesar and the ancient Greeks were really without compare. Without them we would have never advanced so far. It's so wild that so many of things we have and rely on in the modern world were invented by them. My two biggest wonders are seeing what would have happened had Alexander not been poisoned and Caesar not murdered, I just wish SOO BADLY we knew that answer! Hell maybe with the advancement of A. I. it will be able to accurately model a couple scenarios before it takes us out.

The Reason the 10th were called The Mounted 10th Legion is because when German King Ariovistus agreed to meet with Caesar he would only do so if both men only brought a Calvary Escort. Caesar's only Calvary were all Gauls and Caesar not wanting to put his life in Gauls hands gave the Gaul's horses to soldiers from the 10th that acted as Caesar's escort in his meeting with Ariovistus. Henceforth they were the Mounted 10th.

Another reason for the legionaries being reluctant to face Ariovist was that he had officially been declared a friend of the Romans by the senate and Caesar was breaking his assignment by marching against him, so for his legionaries it was the first time they had to choose between the orders of the Senate, in which even some jokingly said Caesar should apologize personally to Ariovist iirc, and Caesar

Titus Labienus is one of the most interesting historical figures of the era in my opinion with very little written about him. I think about what he went through and the decisions that must have weighed on him. It would make for compelling television or narrative storytelling. I suspect most of what was written about him was lost when Caesar won the civil war and then when Octavian came to power.

You keep on mentioning Spain and Spanish that is a terrible inaccuracy, you should call them Iberians or Hispanians, Spain only came to existence 1500 years after. When Julius Cesar fought in Gallia he did not fight nor recruited French, he fought Gauls, same in Lusitania, Rome fought Lusitanians not Portuguese. Details like these can make a good video look amateurish.

I didn't know that the 10th were Spaniards. It makes sense when I now think about it. The Romans adopted a great deal of lessons from their wars in Spain, including the Gladius, the short sword which would remain a Roman stable for several centuries. I guess I will have to read more about the Roman conquest of Spain.

Great documentary, I came your way from Told in Stone. Id love to see the best approximate maps of Europe that the Romans had when maps are needed - rather than modern day maps. Its just adds to the emersion I felt watching the doco. Great overall, thank you for putting this together for all of us history fans

Wonderful video! Caesar really was brilliant, both as a general and as a leader. He had keen insight into human nature and seemed to have a gift for motivating his men. Like Alexander he shared the hardships & dangers with his men or at least appeared to. He very often lead from the front, sword in hand.

I love this, Caesar who was attracted to these young noblemen of course gave them preferential treatment. But he does mention that in an operation against the Germans they were very scared to go and fight the Germans and were looking for excuses to not go on this campaign.

Conn Igulden's Emperor series is a phenomenal 5 book series of novels based upon the life of Gaius Julius Caesar. I can't refer these books enough. Igulden also has authored series about Ghenghis Khan and ancient Greece, all of them fantastic reads.

Another comparison of a strong connection of a skilled and powerful unit in history to their General like Julius Caesar and his famous 10th Legion you could make is Alexander The Great and his famous unit the Silver Shields.

Legio Centurio and Legionarii
The Germans are strong and we do rightly fear them.
Julii Ceasar
If you will not fight for fear. Then you will fight to wipe the shame I feel for you
And so the 10th was made.

Spain, evangelizer of the world; Spain hammer of heretics, light of Trent, sword of Rome, cradle of Saint Ignatius; that is our greatness and our unity; we have no other. Greetings to all Hispanics in the world.

Whats the music played at the intro and at the end of the Vercingetorix segment? I found it very helpful with establishing the mood of of the relationship. Sounds great aswell. Also, great video.

People of Rome! Here on this day (the date) in a sea of fear and doubt, the Aquilifer of the 10th Legion was the first Roman to jump out of that sea and set foot on the land of Britannia!

Your videos are one of the best here. They are so straight to the point I have no words to describe it! Thank you for this gold knowledge. Please make more interesting videos about Rome.

Fun fact: the Legio IX fought with the X in the Numidian part of the civil war. They also charged the enemy without orders once but still won because caesars actions to send in the rest

History has shown that if you are facing the Roman army, the last thing you want to see is them starting to build things because that pretty much means youre boned.
