Ten Minute English and British History #06 - The Birth of England Michael: This is all wrong; a gallant gentleman woke up in Wookey Hole caves (after god placed him there) and was raised by wild animals. He went on to invent the Knight and English Gentleman after jumping on a horse and picking up a stick (which became the Lance. He heard of a maiden that needed rescuing from a dragon and promptly went to slay the beast and take the maiden to wife. Thereafter the kings and queens have ruled and populated England and their sons and daughters now govern the greatest realm in all the world.

Imagine just letting those scandies keep coming over, doing what they want. They had almost nothing. Could have been dealt with in one fell swoop. Still, they became English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish and then they took revenge on the world, sadly. We still weep for the problems they causes.

Watching this series helps me understand why people in England wrote anything important in Latin. I bet a person couldnt understand someone who lived a hundred miles away in England at that time - unless each person understood Latin.

I get what youre going for, a comedic spin on horrible atrocities perpetrated by the leaders of the human race. But you videos make people forget that the awful things we do to each other need to fundamentally change.

I think it's hilarious that so many Kingdoms could exist within like 100 miles of space. Like some guy builds some walls on a Hill claims to be ordained by God and rules over territory the size of a Walmart parking Lot.

So there was a brief Edward here, king of a definitely united English kingdom, but another lad over 200 years later gets the First. That always struck me as inconsistent, but I suppose that's the way things go back then

Strange that the Danish influence has lasted to the present day and it is mostly preserved in the everyday English language that we speak today because it is directly descended from the Anglo-Danish language

The Battle of Brunaburh, in 937, is generally considered the birth of the English Nation - and why does the commentator have to speak so fast - give the viewer time to digest the torrent of facts.

Sorry this one is late, I've had major issues with the syncing in this video so if it's still off let me know.
Next episode is 'The Late Anglo-Saxons and the House of Denmark'.

Maldon
It may be written as it is, but we don't pronounce it as mal-den, but mould-en.
This as someone who has lived here for. I dunno. 12 years or thereabouts.

Ceorl becoming churl later and referring to peasantry makes the word churlish make a lot more sense.
Also, there are few more badass names than Erik Bloodaxe.

I've said this before but I think it's nuts how much more history took place on an island that's barely bigger than my state.

Sure Cornwall wasn't part of England when Alfred was in power, as was shown at the very beginning of this

Where was Arthur and the court at Camelot? _Monty Python and the Holy Grail_ clearly says it is set in 932AD.
