Ten Minute English and British History #10 - The Angevin Empire and Richard the Lionheart V_Cpt-: ive never understood the reasoning for brothers etc to fight for power, how is being a prince not enough? they should have took the norman option and when there were young men wanting power rather than fight fellow normans for it they went off to conquer new lands, out of Henrys 4 sons name the first as king of the entire empire but allow the other sons access to the armies to conquer new lands for themselves, this would set up a series of closesly allied kingdoms and should any of the kings die without an heir their land would simply be partitioned between the rest of the family, the families power would grow exponentially.

It's weird to be able to get through the whole reign of Richard, and be able to say not much was going on in England, since that is usually when people place Robin Hood. Granted, it's a story, more than an historical account, and its not even certain when exactly, or whom, Robin Hood was, but odd. Said story also always makes it seem weird that Richard and John ended up getting along, and John was still allowed to take the throne after his brother's death. Oh well, history is weird, and sometimes English history moreso.

Just a side note, the Third Crusade was actually called for at the end of Henry IIs reign, after hed surrendered to Richard and Philip. Both English and French monarchs vowed to take up the cross and head for the Holy Land, but Henry died before he could begin, leaving Richard as king. Richard was probably the most eager monarch in Europe to take the cross, as hed been begging his father for years to allow him to do so, but Henry has always refused, but now Richard had no one to tell him no.

People liked pious kings who went on Crusades back then and he got a good reputation that never vanished, but the truth is that everything you described about Richard the Lionheart says that he got a great empire that his father conquered and only managed to keep it because he happened to find a good statesmen while he killed non-Christians for being non-Christians.
As far as I'm concerned he's as bad as any other violent religious extremist.

So, this might seem dumb, but the Pope said it was illegal to seize people on Crusade, and even excommunicated the king who captured Richard. Then why, when King Leopold? turned him over to the Holy Roman Emperor was he still held, and ransomed? Why wad it okay for the HRE to hold someone who had been fighting for Jerusalem, and demand exorbitant sums for his release? I'd think the Pope would just say release him, and that would've been that.

Richard gets all the credit for being a 'good' king, even though he bled England dry to pay for the crusades (which he lost, despite massive use of brutality, plus a load of other wars (which he mostly lost) and having to pay his ransom. John gets all the bad rep, despite his reign mostly consisting of repairing Richard's poor governance and economic damage. History just ain't fair.

7: 35 Okay, maybe it's cause I'm high right now, but rotate your phone 90 degrees / pi/2 radians clockwise, and notice how the Mediterranean looks like an old man facing right in a pointy hat waving with one hand while the other holds the hand of a small child, which happens to be the Black Sea looking for all the world like a person as well.

The King and nobility of France were likely afraid that Henry II would flip his seat of power to England, which would, at its height, bring more than half of France under the heel of England.
He probably could've done it if his sons and wife didn't get greedy and occupy the latter half of his reign with civil war.

reply

Well. Now. It all makes sense. So not even the king of England could invade without the popes permission. The Vaticans permission.
So we can guess the Vatican orderd the hit on the aztecs. Delete them and their history of aliens. God is not alien.
Yeah keep saying that.

Your histories are marvelously done.
While viewing the content, this video and others like it, the audience should consider how disorganized, petty, and greedy people actually are.
Less than 1% of all humans have been good people

This episode was quite funny as a french, as our history classes greatly speaks about Phillip Augustus role in the strengthening of the kingdom, so as soon as I heard his name I was like oh boy the english are gonna get their ass beated

What I want to know is, how did the people in the France of that time identify themselves? Did they regard themselves as French or what? It would be interesting to get a picture of the ethnic makeup of the Angevin Empire in general.
reply

English and British history is quite an opinionated statement that tries to claim the Angevin Empire and Richard the Lionheart as as British. It would be much more appropriate to have named this video Franco-British history

Fun fact Richard's conquest of cyprus was the beginning of cyprus being passed around like rations to random European nations for the next couple centuries till the 60s. oh and the ottomans for some 300 something years

Stabbed to death really? They bashed his head open with the flat part of the sword and then scooped his brains out. Beckett died a terrible death, but that's why you don't go against the plantagenets.

Impressed at the accuracy of the map detailing the possesions of the Counts of Flanders. Amiens was indeed theirs at that time when they were probably at their most influential.
reply

I'm here because of Jack Rackam's version of Richard The Lion Heart. Shockingly know as King of England, he personally preferred be Aquittane French than be English.
reply

Could've been written better, didn't really like the bit with four brothers maybe we could get rid of one?
I get that it's a big ask but Richard annoys me.

Why have you left So much Out, And Propagandized Other Information. Especially that the People Everywhere Loved Him. Including His Knights and Soldiers

John: Is playing with toys, since he is 8
His Brothers: plotting to kill their father and getting all the lands for themselves
