The line-ups were huge and specifically made to waste time! People had money but couldn-t buy anything because there was not much to buy! (unless you were able to purchase things at the -special shops- for the -special people---In the government store I remember there being a selection of two colours of coats--one brown, the other black--the sizes were large, medium, and small! -
If you saw shoes in the store you bought them right away, no matter what the size in the hope that you would be able to trade them for a pair that actually fit you with someone else. -
You wanted bread --- there was a long line--got the bread and wanted milk, another long line---chicken? --an even longer line---A truck pulls up (who knows whats inside)--you immediately line up in case it had something worth buying. -
You go on a trip to a restaurant--the sign says -Lunch 11: 00-1: 00-. It is 12: 00 but the door is locked--you see people eating inside and knock on the door--The cook opens it and asks what you want--you tell him lunch--he points up at the sign--yes--but it is 12: 00 noon--He replies that it is their( the cooks and staffs) lunch! --Come back at 1: 00! -
You buy something at a supermarket and the cashier throws in a carton of mouldy cigarettes (even though you dont smoke) and charges you for them! -
Ya--life was great! --But the worse part was always having to look over your shoulder incase a neighbour decides to lie about you to the police! -
A wrong move or a bad lie against you could be a cause for your deportation to a Siberian gulag!\r\n

Collapsed of USSR is calamity to humanity. It should have speed throughout the whole earth and be one nation. All wars would have been then human history. 75% of money spend on military would have been spent on humanitarian purposes. Sad but so many people are 99. 9% ignorant about the depth and the importance of USSR. 70 years capitalism fought against USSR to bring it down finally they succeeded. Gorbachev was a perfect weak man for capitalists to buy him.

6: 40 Yugoslavia was never a member of Warsaw Pact, and also not a Soviet satellite state. Actually Stalin wanted to occupy Yugoslavia just because Tito denied to become a part of Soviet influence. Fortunately Stalin died and so Yugoslavia was never attacked by Soviet Union.
Yugoslavia was founder of the Non alliemdmet movement. Third world countries unified. That what we call today BRICS states. Brasil, India, China, South Africa, Libya, Syria etc.

The crimes against humanity that were commited by the ruling Communist party remained in the collective memory of all Soviet people. All of those causes can be traced back to one thing: communism. Communism was the cause of the downfall of the USSR. Why? From the very beginning, it eroded away the fabric of society for decades and was never sustainable to begin with. You can only wait in seven hour breadlines seven days a week for seven decades until something fails.

Was it the US cutting off the USSR from the rest of the world, depriving people of food and goods, that led to the fall? We-re taught, in the US, that communism is a bad thing. Is it? I-m not sure. Seems like the US govt just wanted the title as the world-s super power so they can pillage and destroy other countries

For myself I think this clip is basicly correct.
I would think Gorba came to the table too late. I would think his actions were correct though.
I should say Gorba did not succeed in avoiding the break up but his actions prevented a full blown civil war. Just barely.

Soviet Union ultimately collapsed because COMMUNISM doesn't work. Cult or ideology based decisions are simply nonsense and are the feeding soil for corruption. Similarly to what we see in the US today but in a much hidden form.
