A look at how to write for the oboe in detail. During this orchestration video you will discover the range of the Oboe, the clef it uses, how it functions as a double reed non-transposing instrument, and how to write for it in such a way that draws out the strengths of the Oboe. Various techniques are demonstrated and you will discover how it-s rich tone and agility can be employed to maximum effect. Much harder to play than many people appreciate, the Oboe can sound pretty harsh and out of tune in the hands of an inexperienced player, yet in the hands of a skilled musician it is one of the most beautiful instruments in the orchestra. I got a little emotional watching this video. Not only is the oboe a beautiful instrument - to me it is hard to pick between the clarinet and oboe for the most beautiful woodwind instrument - you are teaching these things for free on the internet. You are teaching others about the instruments of love (and suffering), about communication and expression of feelings and ideas. I feel very humble when I study the orchestra because I get that feeling that it is way bigger than me and that is more than okay. Music is an infinite exploration. Thank you, sir, for this video.

HI there
Over Blow on Woodwinds.
Reviewing my Notes. It says Flute Oboe bassoon Overblow by Octave. Does this mean AVOID WRITING Octave leaps. And use what type of BIG Leap?
And Clarinet Overblows by a perfect 12th. So does this also mean AVOID writing Perfect 12th and what type of large leaps are best to write for?
Many Advance Thanks in anticipation of a reply.

Beautiful video, fantastic explanation. I love that you are covering the actual tonal differencies and range of the oboe and the best ways to write for it.
If I may ask, which plugin are you using? It sounds so lifelike... I am using Garage Band (I know, but that's what I have) and the sound is so synthetic it's painful, even in the middle register!

Good video, just a correction, the oboe can do double staccato, its more challenging than the flute, so students normally learn it at more advanced stages, but it almost is a standard technique. A good example of a piece where is normal to use it (but not mandatory) is La Scala di Seta - Rossini

Good way to remember the best notes to play in the range of the oboe is to think of the -B- in oboe. The bottom B is flat, and he says to not go above the B two octaves higher.
