Get to know the story of Radio Venceremos, an underground radio collective that fought US-backed fascism during the Salvadoran Civil War. Since the 1800s, a handful of oligarchs had controlled nearly all of El Salvador s land, forcing laborers to work for almost nothing. But in 1980, farmers and urban workers formed guerrilla groups to overthrow the US-backed dictatorship. These revolutionaries were attacked from every direction, but a group of rebels refused to be silenced. Diana Sierra Becerra shares the story of Radio Venceremos.

There's one thing I'd like everyone to think about:
The US government was complicit in these mass crimes. The perpetrators learned their criminal tactics in US schools. The US government sent military aid to the governments committing these crimes.
There is, to this day, continuity between today's US government and the government that aided and abetted these atrocities is maintained. The US never had a revolution or regime change that eliminated the institutions and people who participated in and protected the perpetrators of these crimes. The agencies that did this are still up today.

I'm from El Salvador. It's sad to see how lots of people including very young people gave their lives because they thought they were fighting for a cause like the people from radio Venceremos. FMLN became a political party after the war, as they said in the video, and they came to power in 2009 but nothing changed. If anything, poverty and violence got worst. The authorities of the party who claimed to fight for the poor and against injustice, betrayed all of those who fought and died for a better country. They only got rich and never really cared about the people.

As a Salvadoran, born after the war, I never really knew anything about this except for all the stories my parents and grandmothers told me about the war. They are survivors and hearing their stories and all the information I have studied on my own (sadly this is not well taught in schools) I came to understand the current situation my country lives in. How important it is to know our countrie's history so we understand the present. Thank you TED-ED for shedding light about this.

An interesting video. Clearly the crimes that were committed by the El Salvadorean government at the time are worthy of being brought to light. But this video is also clearly favouring the socialist-Marxist fighters without explained why they failed to take full control and whether their destabilisation of El Salvador was worth it. Would like to hear some opinions! Beautifully animated as always, TED-ED

Communism (cah-mew-niz-um, noun
Actual definition: A socio-political and economic system characterized by the public ownership of all property and industry, as opposed to private ownership.
American definition: Literally anything that political conservatives deem threatening to their political and economic interests, even if those interests rest on a foundation of oppression and exploitation.

I hate the underlying message of the video is capitalism bad for no reason. I mean, government did the hideous deeds governments have always done, but capitalism is blamed? C'mon.
Also don't ever forget socialist revolutions have caused hundreds of millions of deaths, widespread famine and poverty throughout the world in the last century.

United States of America: We are the result of a revolution of freedom that strives to give equal rights to everyone.
Also the United States of America when a country is having a revolution to overthrow corrupt oligarchs and dictators to give equal rights to everyone: Now this is an Avengers level Threat

It's sad that here in the Philippines almost everyone acts blind by the atrocities of the Marcos regime and is revising history because of their fanaticism. I, a part of the Filipino youth will continue to fight historical erasure and revisionism. Never again and never ever forget.

One thing I have always noted is that most videos or texts on this subject say the US Government, and that sort of sanitises the issue. Instead of this, the governments should be named as under whose presidency and CIA chairmanship. The perpetrators need to be held accountable.

The US has been complicit with many dictatorships. For example they allowed the Marcoses to stay in power in the Philippines and even saved them from the angry mob that would have caught and then executed them, like what happened to the Ceausescus of Romania.
