Dig into the science of stretching, and find out what it actually does to your muscles and how you can improve your flexibility. An athlete is preparing for a game. They ve put on their gear and done their warmup, and now it s time for one more routine stretching. Typically, athletes stretch before physical activity to avoid injuries like strains and tears. But does stretching actually prevent these issues? And if so, how long do the benefits of stretching last? Malachy McHugh explores the finer points of flexibility.

We used to stretch at my apprenticeship twice a day. We were learning machining, so it involved standing in front of a machine pulling levers, dials and turning screws all day. It was supposed to prevent repetitive movement injuries, even though we rarely did anything at all repetitively.
So you're saying we were just wasting time?

hahahah. but hypermobile people were told not to stretch because stretching will stretch elasticity and if there is not enough strength to control the joint, it will injury easily

Great video, but It's worth noticing that stretching is controproductive for sprint and endurance (from one minute efforts to 20+ hours efforts) athletes

Forgot to include effects of static vs dynamic stretches, especially research on potential increases in injury risk after static stretching
