Twenty four hundred years ago, Plato, one of historys most famous thinkers, said life is like being chained up in a cave forced to watch shadows flitting across a stone wall. Beyond sounding quite morbid, what exactly did he mean? Alex Gendler unravels Plato's Allegory of the Cave, found in Book VII of The Republic. Lesson by Alex Gendler

If you are unsure whether or not you are in the cave, I have the slightest belief that you are out of the cave (or slowly climbing out of it (at least you're not stuck in the deepest end of the cave (you are making progress (But what is progress? (So many parentheses) and you start to understand that you don't understand.
If you do realize that there is so much more that is unfathomable for us to understand and you actually understand (or you can accept) how unfathomable everything is. There is a chance that you are making a progression (You might not be outside the cave, but you are walking in YOUR right direction out of the cave (The right direction is up to you to find.
Maybe there is no cave, maybe we are just refusing to open or eyes to see what is actually happening straight in front of our eyes (But I guess that is just another analogy to describe this allegory.

Using the example of the story of prisoners in a cave, Plato tried to convey to society what difficulties scientists and philosophers face in trying to enlighten people. Indeed, most of the people are comfortable in ignorance and are greeted with aggression by those who seek to acknowledge them. Ignorance is a serious problem for humanity as it is not a lack of knowledge; it is the conscious refusion of gaining knowledge. So in Athens, Socrates court sentenced him to death for not honoring the gods worshiped by the inhabitants of Athens. According to that, the allegory of the cave brings us closer to other important questions about the nature of the reality surrounding us, the emergence of knowledge, and the problems of human cognition.

We have North Korea as a perfect analogy example of platos allegory cave example. Imagine the children that are born into a country held captive by a dictatorial ruler just like the 3 prisoners in the cave not being able to free think, travel, explore, enjoy what most of us have.
When you think about it is really crazy. Got me thinking since communism is the ideal Form, theoretically the perfect System but in practice its just a bad blue print of the original ideal Form. Maybe I am over thinking this. Id appreciate your thoughts on this feel free to reply on my comment.

I think if youve been locked up in a cave and never seen sunlights since the day you were born, you will have been completely blind and unable to see anything by the time you walk out of the cave. Plato was optimistic enough to believe some people still could be saved.

Whether thinking about ideas within the mind or seeing ideas with the eye, the distinction between the two is meaningless. Everything is a perception, and you drift through a world using distorted perception were most actions are guided merely by chance.

funny this is coming from TED, an extremely liberal/lefty haven. Platos allegory cave is the ultimate metaphor for liberals realizing their propganda-filled, narrative driven media is false and is designed to mentally enslave them (I. E. red-pilled)

Well technically all of reality is an illusion because everyone perceives reality in their own biases. Our universe is just a hologram being reflected from the emptiness of space. Search this up and do some research.

A powerful allegory but should be appreciated in more detail as it offers a lot more to think about and is pretty easy to understand.

Plato was the first 4chan-er. I'm the ultimate source of knowledge and everyone who disagrees is a caveman who can't think
