Only people dumb enough to believe nothing is possibe will think it's magic, the government and NASA are always several steps ahead in techology and science while they keep the rest of the world several steps behind, back in the older days before he 1920s they made people believe all of this including medicine was impossible, it's why people flipped the hell out in the Salem witch trials days because medical science was finally being opened up to everyone where as before they told them it's not possible and kept it a secret only for the rich. now though. we all know what's entirely possible.
Whatever happens in this world it is because of those who say they speak for us when they don't. non of us normal folk put things into motion SO big to intentionally kill mass ammounts of people, steal from billions of people and create tensions across the world to start wars where thousands of people die. that's the worst part of living in the type of society we do. we have no control at all over our actual futures. look at most people. all they can do is just some job in a supermarket, cafe, work in a hospital or waiting in a restaurant because that's all the government allow them to do, you could go to college but most come to the same comclusion that it doesn't get them any where and that all you can do is just settle any job you can find, we don't have real control over our own lives or future, it's horrible feeling powerless about the fact we can't go out there and really do something we really feel passionate about because that's ruined.
Before we are even born that is set in motion for us already. At least though we aren't lied to about what's entirely possible, half way anyway. but from the tech boom we; ve seen since the 90s they now allow us to dream and wonder what's really possible, but before the 1920s they weren't aloud to dream of anything more than what they were told was true, although that is still true with a lot of things but at least we know now that space ships, food replicators, flying cars and all that cool stuff is real, we now call it cool lol, before the 1920s though people thought suggesting such things or even medicines was witch craft: because they were made to think so or at least had no choice to pretend to be ignorant, in the Salem witch trial days if you suggested such things you were hung or drowned as a witch for trying to open the minds of people to new possibilities, it was snuffed out, even being a good person was good enough to be snuffed out, and everyone had no choice but to say you cas a spell on them be accused of being an accomplis and being killed too, it was sickening.

I am amazed at how many things that were once science fiction are now real or at least real possibilities. I get real deep and far out when i consider what Virtual and Augmented Reality brings to the table. I honestly believe that VR and AR technology is the next 'game changer' in a similar way to how cellphones and the internet changed the world.
We are entering a new paradigm in human experience that will have tremendous benefit but also dire consequences. That's another interesting point i've noticed. it seems with all new paradigm shifting technologies, there are always benefits (which is generally what is the intended purpose of these things) but misuse and abuse which can lead to new issues which we did not necessarily foresee. It's like there are built in 'casualties' in each new generation so that there can be change and growth, as we learn how to adapt and design new technologies in the future.

I believe that when studying new technology, researchers try too hard to think outside the box, perhaps because they are thinking within the realm of possibility and feasibility. People such as futurists and science fiction writers do not do this, they believe for the impossible while making it make some amount of sense within their fictional worlds. I believe that these people provide the new ideas that researchers are willing to try. Where would technology today actually be if not for Star Wars, Star Trek, the Jetsons, and other stories portraying a technologically sophisticated world? Computer watches, hovering aircraft, on-demand information, self driving cars, touchscreens, and the like, all coming to fruition. I believe fiction drives the human imagination to boundaries beyond what should be possible to achieve the impossible.

0: 31 - 0: 49 Was the RAND corporation working on such projects at the time they made those predictions? Wouldn't that be a self-fulfilling prophecy? RAND Hey DARPA, what are you all working on and what is your estimated timeline development on those projects? We need to make some predictions here.
It is interesting to see how science fiction drives research and development of technologies.

Does science fiction predict the future (or many possible futures, or does science fiction give ideas to scientists, engineers and so on?
I guess that's a chicken or egg question, but I wonder if the portable news pad exists because someone really loved the idea from 2001 and wanted it to be a reality.

the difference in 21 and 20 century is at 20 century you can only imagine what the future looks like, but in 21 century you just search some random shit like dogs voice translation or flying carpets on google and you would have evidence of their existence or at least their progress on making it.

Science Fiction is NOT about predicting ANYTHING. Such a common misconception! It is just about thought experiments based on extrapolating elements of today's world to make up an exciting story that also let's us understand the current society better. That's it. This video gets it wrong.

We should not overlook that most trend watchers assisting the government are from think tanks sponsored by big businesses with their own interests, in short overlooking real issues (global warming, plastic in the ocean, antibiotics in food chain, etc) for economic opportunities.

Double-entry accounting is 700 years old. What would the economy be like today if accounting had been mandatory in high school for the last 50 years? Is that science fiction? How could schools make it mandatory now without explaining why they didn't already do it?
