The Ancient Egyptian king Thutmose III described the chicken as a marvelous foreign bird that gives birth daily. Romans brought them on their military campaigns to foretell the success of future battles. Today, this bird occupies a much less honorable position on dinner plates. Chris Kniesly explains the evolving role of chickens throughout history. Lesson by Chris A. Kniesly, directed by Mark Phillips

The ritual the Romans did with the chickens was essentially decided by their eating habits. If they ate when food was offered this was a good omen. On one occasion, while in command of a fleet, Publius Claudius Pulcher became frustrated when the chickens wouldn't eat, he threw them overboard saying If they wont eat, then let them drink. He lost the battle and was tried for incompetence and had to pay a huge fine.

Q. What came first, the chicken or the egg?
A. The chicken came first! The egg has a protein that only a chicken can make. If the chickens didn't exist in the past, the egg can't be made because it needs the protein to be created. So the chicken came first.
