In January 1953, a tidal surge shook the North Sea. The titanic waves flooded the Dutch coastline, killing almost 2, 000 people. 54 years later, a similar storm threatened the region. But this time, they were ready. This was thanks to a massive, interlocking system known as the Delta Works the most sophisticated flood prevention project in the world. Stefan Al dives into this marvel of engineering. Lesson by Stefan Al, directed by JodyPrody

I sure wish the Dutch could export their mindset on protection from natural disasters like this. Imagine if every country around the world had organizations as determined as the Dutchs Delta commission to ensure sustainable protection from natural disasters. I for one would be really happy to see more cities and countries around the world learn from the Dutch in this manner.

I get a sense from the video you think the Zeeland water ways are completely dammed off. They aren't. The structures you see all over the dams close down in case of backflow, they're normally as open as the Maaslandkering. (horrible pronounciation of that one btw, I had to do a triple-take to understand what you meant.

also, the deltaplan was at first disasterous to the natural habitat inland, because salt water would stop flowing inland. Certain species of fish, bird and flora would suffer from it. They revisited their plans to sustain the inflood of salt water to a degree so that the ecosystem would be preserved.

The rest of the world should take notes, this might be vitally important for coastal cities in the future because of climate change.
