Youre cruising down the highway when all of a sudden endless rows of brake lights appear ahead. Theres no accident, no stoplight, no change in speed limit, or narrowing of the road. So why is there so much traffic? It's due to a phenomenon called a phantom traffic jam. Benjamin Seibold explains why it happens and how we might prevent it in the future. I read up on this in the past and now I apply this knowledge during traffic jams. In grid-lock, I don't touch the accelerator at all -- I simply idle forward, and only when I have 15 - 30 meters in front of me. If my idle speed is sufficient for a good 10 - 30 seconds, and the traffic in front of me is gaining distance, I increase my speed by about 10 mph. I apply that same logic until I'm back up to speed; if my current speed is sufficient for 10 - 30 seconds, and the traffic in front is gaining, I increase my speed by 10 mph. The important part is to avoid touching the brakes as much as possible, never change lanes, and only increase your speed.
Unfortunately this tactic causes a lot of angry drivers behind me and a lot of superfluous merging into my lane while there is a gap, but I really do feel as though I'm improving the flow of traffic. The change is noticeable. At least, it seems noticeable and less frustrating.

I've been trying to tell people this for so long! While in traffic focus on the car in front of the car in front of you and slow down according to that one to try to reduce the stop and go traffic cuz you ease into your stops better. I also try to coast as much as I can so I can catch up to the car in front of me around the time that it starts moving again meaning that I never stop, I just drive at a constant but slower speed than the stop-go cars hopefully causing the cars behind me to not have to stop at all or at least less. I call it anti-traffic driving and I've been doing it for at least a decade or more. It doesn't help me get anywhere faster but it does make the drive more interesting and most importantly it hopefully helps everyone behind me. I just wish it would catch on more.

I think it is not the poor sense of the road conditions that makes a driver accelerate and brake, it is the constant honking and a pressure from rear vehicles to move faster makes this speeding up and down (all done of course within the speed limits, to solve the problem, rather than a self driven car we need to control the traffic density on the road, by building new highways, flyovers or not productive whatsoever way where governments restrict and control vehicle purchases over a year kind of scenario, traffic is tough to avoid in my opinion, unless we smart out by driving at unusual times when traffic is low or even roads are empty, leaving an hour early can make a lot of difference in your travel in my opinion.

For the conclusion bit talking about how a self-driving car drives, I already drive like that. It drives people nuts. So many people try to pass if you try to go the average speed of travel only, when the wave lets cars accelerate, there appears to be an opening in traffic that other lanes take because I didn't also accelerate into the soon-stopped next wave. Not sure there's an answer to that one, but it's not quite as simple as it seems. Maybe after some decent percentage of traffic does this, we can get more sensible roads, but as is I don't see it getting better fast.

Many drivers need to be informed with the old-fashion Harold Smith Method of driving. Many drivers have speed demons in them and they drive fast by habit not when it is only necessary to speed up.

This proves how incapable so many humans are that not only but a machine and autonomoussystem drive the car better, but a fish really like in this case would be better than most drivers
