Explore how geothermal energy the heat in the Earth s crust is being used to create renewable electricity and power. While the weather in Iceland is often cold, wet, and windy, a nearly endless supply of heat bubbles away below the surface. In fact, almost every building in the country is heated by geothermal energy in a process with virtually no carbon emissions. So how exactly does this renewable energy work? Jean-Baptiste P. Koehl explores the two primary models for harnessing the planet's natural heat

I have my serious doubt of calling it renewable; it is in no way getting renewed. The Earth's core isn't generating heat out of thin air; as it gives off heat, it loses it, and hence it is cooling down. With time, the thermal potential is decreasing, but yes it is decreasing at quite a low rate. And there are other factors to it as well. If I am missing something, I will be glad to be corrected.

I was in Iceland two years ago and one of the first things I learned was that around 90% of the country is powered by geothermal energy. I even visited an organic tomato farm where the greenhouses were heated by it and the cops were fully pollinated by imported honeybees.

I just love how nice and decent everything looks and sounds on paper while we all know that during implications I don't think any businessman will care about ground water pollution or earthquake as long as they profit.

Not 20 million dollar but only 8 million dollar per well drilling, with the current technology, but it takes several times drilling to find the correct well. Been several decades building geothermal plants.

2: 34 Could someone please explain why small scale geothermal heat pumps are considered sustainable loops, if external power is required to operate the system?

I am amazed by this, my country has some volcanoes, this might be a nice solution, ofcourse doing the proper research and using proper tools and equipment
