Julius Caesar is one of the monumental figures of history. He forged the role of Emperor and was worshipped as a brilliant general and reformer, but he was killed by the people who knew him best manuelkong10: To say Julius Caesar's rise was ONLY due to bribery and corruption is really rather ignorant.
First off, the Entire Roman system was bribery and corruption. if you were good at something, as Caesar and some others were, that was an added bonus THAT WAS SEEN TO BE A THREAT BY ESTABLISHMENT. ie the oligarchy, the thick headed senators.
The oligarchic patrician class was REALLY THREATENED by Anybody who could Actually Do Anything. they wanted to limit the defining element of who could be part of the upper ranks to birthright ONLY.

How can someone be loved by the people but hated by the Elites? . Just look at Donald Trump. If not for 95% of American media being owned by Democrat donors. I think most people would have really liked the majority of Trump's policies. Most people just never heard the truth about what Trump was doing. The American media hides / ignores truth and pushes the Democrat narrative.
This is also the same reason why people think Biden is doing ok, when in reality, he is an awful president. His own kids have said he's taking bribes from foreign countries. and yet, most people will never hear about those facts because they follow Democrat owned media sources.

Caesar wasnt rejected when he asked the senate (well those who didnt flee) they didnt give him a response so he just took it as a yes, and how could Caesar and Pompey face off in a corn field in greece. corn. which is only native in america! Wich wasnt discovered untill over a millenia later.
AND Cassius did not kill Caesar because Caesar stole some lions, Cassius killed him for power and control. Bodygaurds were also not seen as a weakness. Many senators had gaurds especially during the gangs were warring in Rome.

Caesar could NOT just go back to Rome and avoid all the Roman deaths that would occur over the next 6 years. THE SENATE WAS LOOKING TO KILL HIM
and robinson conveniently leaves out that Pompey REFUSED to get rid of HIS legions.
Pompey was Only willing to help Caesar's career if Caesar was going to Support Pompey. but once Caesar got too powerful for Pompey to control, he became anti Caesar.
Pompey wasn't looking out for Rome. he was looking out for himself

The Gauls actually had the idea to be one nation, but it was a different idea of what is a nation: their tribe. The same can be said for everyone everywhere also today.
One can consider his nation is his city, province or region, or even all the people supporter of his same football team. Or also my country is me and my family.
The idea of nation is variable in time and subjective, not static and objective.

Caesar pardoned enemies and they killed him in the end.
Giving up your legions signs your own death warrant.
Augustus killed his enemies and he died in bed.
There is a lesson here.
Caesar's conquest of Gaul brought unimagined amounts of gold, silver and slaves.
Wealth equals Power.
The Golden Rule.
He who has Gold makes the Rules.

People seem to ignore that Caesar escaped many assassination attempts before 44. The most famous is 63, when the senators wanted to kill him for plotting against the Consuls with Catilina. Caesar was killed in 44 for wanting to be a king. An abomination for the Romans since the Tarquins.

The Roman's sure were back stabbing power hungry maniacs. Watched four documentaries on different Roman emperors and seems like every one of them was murdered /poisoned by the people around them. I guess being emperor isn't such a good deal after all. =)

Those first Julian calendars must have driven people crazy, living in the B. C. years like they were. Everyday that passed was a BIGGER number than the day before, but every year that passed was a SMALLER number than the year before.

If the BBC were doing a documentary on the Battle of Midway they would have the narrator paddling a dinghy and narrating from the Pacific Ocean with an aircraft carrier in the background and Japanese Zeroes flying overhead

I do like him, he learned from The Gracchi, Marius and Sulla the rights of the people were stolen by the elites who would not give them up without a fight and he was more than willing to give them with they demanded.

There's always been a problem telling this story in the southern U. S. When they get to the assassination and Ceaser says, Et tu Brute? Some times the reply is, nah man, I et earlier! I guess you had to be there!

It is an exaggeration to say that the Roman Republic was a democracy. The voting system was rigged to the benefit of the upper classes and they were always firmly in the saddle.

this is wonderful video but would be great if you add subtitles to your videos for us which English is not our first language we could understand it more from subtitles thanks.

it should be made compulsory, with translations for other languages, to show Tony Robinsons Episodes in classes. Instead of the - dronings - of most of the history teacher.

Hail Caesar! He was an epitome of the European monarchy. He is a watershed between the Republican and Patriarchal monarchy in Rome. No wonder, Rome was not built in a day.
reply

Believe it or not I was actually right there when Caesar was killed. He did IN FACT speak his last words. He said, if nothing else, name a salad after me.
reply
