German V1 was first rocket, V2 was first human made object in space. Then Soviet and USA took that knowhow and made them bigger. USA had Von Braun, inventor of V2 and they had better chance but Soviet was a little ahead at first. Brits had nothing to do with rocket engineering in first decades.

It was an American who made the first liquid fuel rocket name Robert H. Goddard. Just for the record I'm a Brit. Fair play, and all that. Although the UK does not build rockets, it is one of the leaders in satellite manufacturing. Earning a lot of money.
