The Real-Life Captain Morgan Was More Interesting Than His Rum

When you hear the name Captain Morgan, images of bros posing with a handle of spiced rum with one foot danging precariously in the air probably come to mind. While there were plenty of pirates whose reputations were built on boozin' it up with bar wenches la modern rum-guzzling frat bros, the real Captain Morgan is not one of them. Sir Henry Morgan doesn't sound like the name one of the most terrifying pirates in the Caribbean - but the ruthless Captain Henry Morgan propelled himself to fame and riches by terrorizing his enemies and seizing a fortune in gold from the Spanish. The history of piracy is full of surprises, and these Henry Morgan facts are no exception

Well, he was far from being a saint or even a good employer: Panama attack was almost a disaster - a bunch of his men starved to death or died from the diseases; his numerous attack plans leaked to the Spanish multiple times, and only their overall ignorance saved Captain Morgan from total failure; still, the money taken from Panama were much smaller than expected, as such almost all of his men got the payment barely above the one royal fleet would pay them (which compering to later general pirate wage was just trash, especially taking into the account how much work it took to take the city, while Morgan and his most trusted officers fled with most of the loot (that also prompted most of the men left to help Panama rebuild since they did not have money to even leave. When Morgan retired he was not just a landowner - he was a slave owner - the biggest on Jamaica as far as I remember reading about his life. So, he certainly was not a hero, but a fairly clever individual who gained his reputation and position due to a lot of luck, hoax, and cruelty.

Captain Morgan was a Welshman born (we think) Cardiff as he had a manor house in what he claimed his place of birth which is Llanrumney, Cardiff. It is believed once he settled down in Jamaica due to his profound fame/infamy he gave the name Llanrumney to his final resting place in Jamaica. Llanrumney in jamaica is still there now.

According to family lore, my father was descended from Morgan's brother. The Morgans were from Wales (wish I could remember where [EDIT: they were from Tredegar]. I have no idea if it's true, but it's an amusing possibility, since we're more or less teetotallers. :)

Captain Morgan is one cool commander only honest to his men an going gets tough after Spanish gold which he went through many strategics ways to get it I like if Warner bros or universal pictures make a pirateer of Morgan would make a good story as next to jack Sparrow

A mercenary of the Seven Seas turned into a pirate by a spirit company. I think I can see why they made him the face of such a rum, being a governor in Jamaica and rum being seen as a favorite amongst swashbuckling pirates

Captain Morgan died of alcoholism. He owned sugar plantations and drank his own rum. His physician at the time, Hans Sloane, is also credited with bringing the recipe for chocolate milk back to England

And Im sure they named the rum after him because pirates love rum and captain Morgan has a ring to it there are probably other reasons too
