Mongolians don't eat dog meat. Nobody in Mongolia would agree on that part. Some people say it's because dogs are considered as loyal friends and some would say that dogs are reincarnation of souls who came closest to becoming humans. And also we have a saying that literally translates to no bowl no mouth which means if you don't have your own bowl or cup it's same as having no mouth. You just look at the food and watch others eat but you can't eat unless you bring your own bowl. That's why every mongols would carry their own bowls, spoons and knives (small knife to cut cooked meats only. About those washing in running water policy is actually out of respect and care for nature. It is a nomadic ethic to respect and protect the nature because nature is the number one source of our lives. It was considered taboo to wash in the river, but you can take water from the river and wash yourself at home. There are many findings of everyday life equipments that goes way back of Chingis Khaan's years such as water container and washing bowls in the museums in Mongolia. One of the cleaning ways were using alcohol. It was kind of working as a sanitizer. And fire was also a way, but fire is considered sacred, putting bad things in the fire means you and your family would be punished by the god of fire for dirtying their stomach. So, it's just impossible to use fire to clean clothes and stuff, just think about it. What I'm trying to say is most of the historical views on Mongols were reflected upon the soldiers who were away from home traveling hundreds and hundreds of miles just on their horses making sky as their roof and land as their bed. However, we still have certain things common with rest of the world like cleaning houses brushing hairs, taking baths. we are still humans.

8: 00 I cant help but think this was some kind of misunderstanding on the part of the Italian who likely didnt get the full translation or understanding of what happened - it could have been that the event he witnessed was someone deliberately spitting as a form of insult and disrespect towards another person and thus the heavy price they paid of being killed. This is also a form of disrespect and insult even in the west and to deliberately spit in the presence of someone or when their name is mentioned is a way of showing your blatant disregard, disrespect and hatred of a person.
Those medieval European historians back then were wack and would often report something as being the full fact and story of what actually happened when in fact they often misunderstood the cultural significance or underlying meaning behind a lot of customs and foreign behaviors.

Yuck! I prefer to have clean clothes, indoor plumbing, a way to brush my teeth, and a nice, hot shower to clean myself with liberal amounts of soap/water! Also, I prefer to have a permanent roof over my head, a soft, comfortable bed in which to sleep, along with air conditioning for the hot months and heat for the cold months! I would never share a cup with people who have poor hygiene for fear of catching a deadly disease! I would never make it as a member of a Mongol horde! Being an American raised in the suburbs with impeccable manners/hygiene habits I'm way too civilized for a group like that!

Of course, but so as other European monarchs and others in the medieval era. Everybody had a stench. The Versailles was disgusting. The smell and all of it, they threw their waste in the whole palace, and urinated everywhere. At least we didnt do that and claimed that Water was the source of diseases. If you think about it we cherished the nature and the four elements and actually had respect for it.

ancient mongols did not believe in hygiene as we refer to it today. water was drinking only because they believed in a water dragon and therefore would not abuse the water for bathing or cleaning or laundry because that would spoil the purity of water and upset the dragon spirit. clothes were worn till they literally were rags and unwashed. be happy you live in the best time in history. hygeine. medical care. science. luxuries.

Urination law re flowing water sounds good - I mean that might be someones drinking water. The in home version? I guess visitors could have peed into say jugs of water if there had been any kind of leniency - fear of death and existence of this law all prob stopped horrifying diseases from spreading. That and the dry desert air. ahhh deep intake of breath. Insert irreconcilable coughing here. The sand - my god the sand.

I can't believe the Mongols didn't have hygiene habits. They'd probably be different from ours. They lived mostly in the desert, so it's natural that they wouldn't waste water. It's not weird if they eat dogs meat. In situations of extreme starvation any society would do the same. We must not forget that the reports that exist about Mongols are from people who barely know their culture.

Id like to know about hygiene and intimacy practices among the Turks and Ottoman Turks. Also, where did these new meds relieve themselves? Did they take latrines? Was there a difference between the practices of males and females as to where they could relieve themselves?

It was said during the Mongol conquests you could smell the hordes long before you actually saw them. To be fair though, basic hygiene and sanitation even among the Europeans was lacking too. Superstition and ignorance was very prevalent in many cultures.

They weren't allowed to clean there clothes or bsghe. I forget the reason I think it was gengis khan religious learning. But that is why everyone who faced them in battle or who's city they conquered said they smelled so bad.

Their clothes were probably made of suede and leather. People who live in the desert don't waste water splashing about in it either. 100 years ago some people had a bath once a week. if it was warm enough.
