Have never seen the point of keeping someone masked while in prison. Even if not, who'd know him anyway? Other prisoners wouldn't've seen or been exposed to him. How could they know the guy's identity, especially a mere valet, if, in fact, Dauger. Dim, poorly-lit cells, halls, & passageways, too. Court officials, aristocrats, nobility, & the like weren't well-known facially by the public at large back then. This doc makes a good point in that the mask likely wasn't made of iron, something I hadn't heard before. Probably just velvet or a lighter-weight, simpler contraption. Makes sense. Any high-ranking prisoner who knew certain crucial state secrets, committed treason against the state, i. e, the king, or whatever, simply would've been murdered, the body discarded. There's probably a small grain of truth in the original story or legend but let's not forget---Alexandre Dumas had one heck of a great imagination!

The only thing that makes sense is he was the King's real father. It was remark that the sun was nothing like that King totally opposite. And if he had another father he would have no claim to the throne. But even Louis the 14th would balk at killing his own father. Clearly the mask was a precaution not a punishment. As he ate like a king and allowed to want for nothing. The king and the queen were estranged at the time and the Cardinal desired another king that he could control. He arranged for someone in the royal family to come and impregnate the queen and then arranged a reunions between the king and queen and to everyone's surprise the queen became pregnant. Which would give him no legal claim to the throne.

If he was just a valet he could have been killed unless he was Noble born. It seems more likely to me that it was the previous Kings bastard son by some high-ranking Noble woman who was much more popular than the queen. In other words a contender for the throne but being of Royal Blood Louie the 14th couldn't bear to kill his father's flesh and blood. If he had been free to work as a valet before during the previous King his own father's life that would make sense but that his legitimate brother the heir was much less comfortable with him traipsing about the countryside with an obvious Royal resemblance. Cuz if he was just some lowly valet he could have been killed and disposed of with no such expense or secrecy.

You're asking the wrong question. It is not WHO is in the mask by WHY? in an age when the king could easily have someone topped why go to the trouble to keep him alive? Why go to the trouble of keeping him a secret? It's not like there was a civil rights group banging on the door. Thee's also the assumption there was just one man. what if it was a punishment inflicted on several men over time? how would you know?

Some investigators believe that Louis XIV's real father was the Italian cardinal Mazarin (Mazzarino)-after all Anne of Austria Louis's mother had failed to become pregnant to king Louis XIII (he was probably gay and impotent) until the cardinal came along and queen Anne became pregnant! The man in the iron mask was probably someone who was in the know about this state of affairs.

Actually it wasn't it was eustache d'auger d' cavoye. he was the man in the mask. and it wasn't iron but felt. he knew a secret that involved royalty and he was put away in prison because he resembled the king. you need to read the book by Harry Thompson. He found out who the man in the mask really was.

mabey he really was the the old harvey weinstein or michael jackson and did deserve the punishment layed forth, a punishment worse than death to be masked like a dog for the rest of his life and the burning of all the stuff once he died.

The iron mask was Philipp, nobody else, the Louis's twin, for I dont see other reason for that mask intrigue. But first the remains should be found and the gene analysis fulfilled to prove this once and forever.

it had to be someone whose very existence was a threat to the king, hence the effort taken to keep his identity a secret for three decades. it had to be a relative who could have claimed a right to the throne.

I'm still leaning towards him being King Louis and Philippe's biological dad. There's no reason to keep a valet alive, they would just kill them.

You would think they would have just killed the guy instead of putting him in prison for the rest of his life.

I preferred Richard Chamberlains film of the story. Leonnardo DeCaprios version butchered the story.
