Its all to simplistic, and what this short documentary does, is follow the ancient propaganda without clarification on specific subjects. For example yes he does kill his sister after he first ordered a banishment to capri. But hey his sister tries to kill him first out of pure jealousy, towards commodus wife Crispina. So if you cannot trust your family who can you trust. After this assassination attempt more follow, from people within his circle of persons hed trusted. If that doesnt make you paranoia? Then comes the plaque and the thought to be better or living up to the status of a legend his father Marcus Aurelius. Remember that commodes was very young when he inherited the title emperor from his father and not ready up to the task of. Many of his inner circle took advantage of him being young and naive, and manipulated him for their own interest. After the many assassination attempts commodus even want to distance himself from the throne, which created a vacuum in where people as cleander could fill the gap. imagine yourself in his shoes

Well, it eventually struck me that Romans had no sense of the end of history or time as pagans, perhaps beyond the apotheosis of the most powerful among them. Who was to say, could have run Imperial reasoning, that the gratification of lust and unlimited acquisition of power, considering also that the emperor was ruler of most of the known world that the pretention to complete self-indulgence was not the true fulfillment of time and the aspirations of the Empire? That Godhood itself awaited the person who occupied the Imperial throne, and the power of such a possibility, nay probability, of apotheosis perhaps had a destabilizing effect on the more vulnerable people psychologically occupying the consulship.

To be onest commodus wasnt as crazy as most of those video depicts
There are new studies were most of the famous action that he did for example the horse in the senate. mostly were to lower the power and influence of the senators and indeed works
For sure was not what the father expected because at the moment of his death Marcus Aurelio ( sick and debilitated ) left himself to die alone by starvation without letting his son to say goodbye!

I know there is no easy way or canonical resource for how to correctly pronounce Latin (and it is generally not what people would guess, and _certainly_ not how such words are currently pronounced nowadays, _but, _ for a video _about_ Roman history, one would figure the filmmaker(s) would want to get the one word right.
_Koe-moe-doos. _ Equal stress on the syllables.

Gladiators were slaves and the emperor associating with them was likely viewed badly by the common class
Hate to be _that guy_ but that's not exactly true. Gladiators of that time were basically celebrities and were idolized and revered by the Roman masses, though his fake fights with them were likely seen for what they were.

Ik imperial families were taught that they were damn near divine but if my kid said he wanted a servant thrown into a furnace over some hot water I'd beat the shit out of him & exile him to the middle east he'd never become emperor idgaf if 8 have to adopt a new heir or let a daughter rule after me. little sociopath

It's crazy how it took so long for Roman emperors to realize that maybe showing some self-control and restraint in how they interacted with others might curtail all these assassination attempts. >__>
Better late than never though.

This, and the fact that Putin currently has the world worrying about nuclear war, is the reason that no single person should ever be given so much power.

the question is to what extent do we believe the Augustan History?
historians then were even more partisan and prejudiced than they are today
