Banking was in use before the Renaissance. The Knights Templar had a system where you could pay money into one of their headquarters in one city, receive a letter confirming that you had, and then travel to another city hundreds, or even thousands of kilometres away where you could hand over the letter and get cash from another branch of the Templars. They also loaned money, which is believed to be a major reason why the monarchs of Europe turned against them. The Medici did basically the same, minus the fighting in the Holy Land and getting burned alive.
