First of sll I don't think the moon would 'most likely' go through the hole. Don't get me wrong it would be really nice to look at but the moon is really far away, why is it suddenly so close? Also if it were as massive as ours it would most likely break up the torus considering it is already not that stable. If we wanted a stable moon around that torus it would probably be best to have it far away and orbit in a circle just like ours does in real life.
Second, I don't agree that the vlimate would be that similar. Due to the fact that it is rotating so fast the atmospheric and oceanic circulations would be much more localised in latitude due to the coriolis force being stronger which would result in much more extreme climates with the poles (which are now circles btw) being really cold. Also the inside of the torus would be interesting to look at, because the other side of the planet would regulary block sunlight from getting there. Depending on the size of the arc in the sky and the planets axial tilt the inside could get some daylight on certaing times of the year but especially during the equenoxes in March and September the sun would be fully blocked. On the other hand if the sunlight reaches the inside, it would still not get dark because the nightside would be illuminated by the bright arc in the sky which is getzing sunlight

If you want to (kinda) see this in action, look up. any of a whole bunch of oldschool games with a world map. The entire Dragon Quest series, for example, appears to take place on (a) toroidal planet(s. I was playing Dragon Quest V, and just got to a south island by going north.

The moon going in figure 8 through the hole makes sense but it must also be some kind of projection/hologram so that everybody sees the same side of it. And now getting the sun to work out gets really complicated. Maybe with an extra tiny sun?
