Throughout history, there have been many incredible civilizations that have shaped the way we live today. One was Ancient Rome, a once majestic and thriving city whose strong foundations live on to this day. Yet despite all its grandeur, life as an average citizen in Ancient Rome was hard and unforgiving. What strange customs did the Romans have? What was the life expectancy of an average citizen? What did the Romans do for fun?

maybe just me but I don't think calling Julius Caesar -infamous- fair at all
yeah he ignored many roman laws, and made many enemies in the government. but dude was extremely popular among citizens and made very important political reforms

The -shared sponge on a stick- theory has pretty much been abandoned due to the recent discovery of some graffiti. It is now thought that the sponge on a stick was used to clean the toilet itself, just as we do today with a toilet brush.

Well, I don't speak Latin(though my French is close) nor Greek( the language of the wealthy); I can't fight(gladiator school is out) and I'm not much of a domestic. So, the jobs I could get would not be the most lucrative, I'm afraid.

Say what you want, but the shape of the society was pretty good back then, some places in 2021 still got no water and also the ocean full of plastic, yeah no thanks, i like 21 century but living in acient times wasn't so bad
reply

Call it like you want but the Bottom line is, Romans lived better during the Height of the Roman Empire than Americans did in the Civil War times some 2000 years later! They also lived better than the entire Medieval times.

Usually, soldiers, don't became gladiators.
Slaves bought to fight, criminals, people full of debts, they were the common gladiators.
Sure, some people fought just for excitement and glory but it was not really common.

I tried to watch/listen to this but it seems to be aimed at children. Gave up after a few seconds, when the commentator mentioned that Augustus was Julius Caesar's son! Caesar as his uncle. Nuff Said.

You wouldn't want to live in the Roman 'Golden Era' as a slave and you definitely wouldn't want to commit any offence that attracted death by crucifixion as either a slave or non-Roman.

Then, top 1% controlled 16% of Rome's wealth.
That was a time considered unforgiving and hard.
Now, top 1% control over 75% of the WORLD's wealth.
Let that sink in.

If I lived in ancient Rome, I'd realistically be dead in a week. But if I can take modern knowledge with me, I and the Roman Republic would survive longer I think.

6: 05 This was not the first mall in the world. The real markets/ancient malls were the Persian and Mesopotamian Bazaars that preceded Roman markets by many centuries!

Nephew, not son. Julius had one daughter who died during childbirth, an one son with Cleopatra that died in Egypt at 15 by his nephew

The first thing that most of you would do if you woke up in ancient Rome one morning is ask -where's my cell phone? -
reply

Citizens of Rome didn't become gladiators. It was only slaves or freeman who did. This video gives you the wrong idea.

Watered wine. The water wasn't good to drink so they made wine. Now, they are drinking watered wine. What gives?
reply

Clients were not slaves. They were Roman citizens, and most definitely not sold (at least not by other Romans.
