Dialect coach Erik Singer analyzes the accents of some of Hollywood's biggest names. How accurate were they really? Check out more from Erik here Cygnus: This is great fun. I have a good enough ear to know that someone is faking it but not to know if it's -accurate. - If it's consistent and makes sense, I don't care if it's accurate. These are actors in movies. But some are obviously just bad (Costner being medieval British, or perhaps Olivier doing the same thing)
That would be interesting -- how -authentic- is Olivier's accent in Henry V or Burton playing a Roman?

As someone northern irish, I feel like a lot of the accent imitations always lean to the southern irish accent rather than the North. We do have regions which sound more Southern or a bit of a mix but it's rare to see someone do a properly coarse Belfast accent, of the two examples they both sounded like weak southern irish attempts.

Ledger & Gyllenhaal gave us 2 of the most perfect performances ever on film in Brokeback Mountain.
I still wish Ledger had been able to win for this one instead of his posthumous win for The Dark Knight.
He deserved to have his moment in LIFE for his performance as Ennis!

I think one of the things this video definitely shows is how much more time actors are given to actually prepare accents than they used to be given. Directors and producers just didn't care back when they were cranking out quantities of films not quality

love that this exist, in the back of my mind when a movie is set in a different country and everyone is speaking english i think of a universal translator. Be it a real story of fake, if it was real they would have spoken their language obviously.

Irish travellers accent is nothing like what he calls Belfast accent, I don't know why he thinks it's meant to be northern Irish at all. Would love to have heard what he thought about Russell Crowe's appalling effort at a Nottinghamshire accent

I love DiCaprios performance in Blood Diamond because the South African accent is soooo hard. I think he did quite well
The Japanese accent was just racist my god -.
Also, as an Irish person, Tom Cruises accent literally hurts me -

I'd love to hear Erik Singer's analysis of Cher's Brooklyn/Italian accent in her Oscar winning performance in Moonstruck.
People still debate it's authenticity. I think she nailed it, and it's an incredibly difficult accent to master!

Some of these guys sound not so great but others are amazing. Some of them I wished he would give them a break. Like Leonardo DiCaprio in Blood Diamond. Oh I'm sorry did he not quite nail the OTHER accent he had to learn for this role?

So Daniel Day Lewis is Incredible. Philip Semour Hoffman was gifted and Heath Ledger outstanding. Everybody else. meh. Mostly not bad, but nowhere near these 3. Alas only one survives and I think he has retired.
