Dr. Mathias Nordvig, a professor of Norse mythology, sits down with WIRED to compare and contrast Marvel's interpretations of Norse gods. Dr. Nordvig goes into great detail about everything from Thor's hammer to Odin's eye and Loki's shapeshifting. SuperEdwick: I think Stan Lee admitted in -Origins of Marvel Comics- that he and Jack Kirby really didn't know much about Norse mythology when they created their comic book Thor. They used some of what they remembered, but just made up a whole bunch of stuff (which is why Thor and Sif have the wrong hair color, for instance. What's also left out of this video is that the movie Thor has no resemblance to the character Stan and Jack created, but is based on the famous Walter Simonson run on -Thor- in the 80's, where he injected Norse mythology back into Marvel's Asgard and completely revised Thor's character (punting his secret identity of lame Dr. Donald Blake, for starters. That Simonson run is legendary for good reason, and one of the few cases in comics where the re-vision fully and completely replaced the original. But Dr. Nordvig here is a Norse mythology expert, not a comic book fan, so there's no reason why he would have known about that Simonson run. I think he'd dig it, though.
