Video Game Director Answers Questions From Twitter Tech Support

Video Game Director Answers Questions From Twitter Tech Support

The Callisto Protocol director Glen Schofield answers the internet's burning questions about video game development and horror games. Why are horror video games scarier than horror movies? Why was Elden Ring so dang hard? How do you design levels in a horror game? How well does finger motion capture work? How do game physics work? FlashheadX: Incredibly based, but I disagree on the importance of story. I put down games with great stories because they weren't fun to play, I never put down fun games when the story is terrible - I'll just skip the dialogue. Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece in writing, but I found Silent Hill 1 much more enjoyable due to it's superior level design and atmosphere. I played Dead Space 1 last year and absolutely loved it, but I barely remember what it was about. A much more important part of the writing is to set up an authentic setting.

5: 11 re game ratings As a former blockbuster employee I can honestly say I think we were relived in some ways when the BBFC came along in the U. K. and rated games. ELSPA had been more of a recommendation and the ages hadn t lined up with videos and it was a mess with parents to understand in the rental market so when the BBFC rated the games that was it done and dusted. This was of course ELSPA was then replaced with PEGI in U. K. alongside BBFC ratings, that we continue to have.

I think video game price should be base on the quality and the cost of making the game. for examample fifa shouldn't cost the sane as other games like God of War of Red dead. we have many 60 dollars games that are worth pure crap. Now is is easier said than done but we should try to find a solution to video game prices instead of just increasing all video games to the sky equally

Glen is great! The detail he goes into for these questions just highlights his passion and he seems not to have lost it after all these years.
Check out his interviews about Dead Space, fantastic insight into game development.
Definitely been a top Tech Support video for me, would love to see him back for more!
Thanks Wired and Thank you Glen

One thing that worries me is seeing, for example, the people at the Jet Propulsion Lab who are my age. They are eccentric geeks. What would happen to the younger version of these people today? Would they have a fun job where they're the navigator for the Mars rover or would they be playing video games in a basement somewhere?

Great vid, but. When I saw the title I was hoping for one of the old legendary game directors. Don't get me wrong, Mr Schofield has birthed some amazing games, I just thing Avellone or Sawyer would bring more perspective. Josh Sawyer especially, he already loves talking about game design wherever he can

Elden ring is hard because the people who make it, fromsoftware, have always made difficult games and specifically mostly due to health differences and skill to actually beat each enemy because to beat a boss you have to learn their move set and time your attacks

Yes games have stayed 60 dollars for a decade, yes they've doubled in cost to make, but they've also gotten infinitely more popular as well selling lots more copies. add DLC, store items and loot boxes and this is a lame duck argument. Don't be the shill. You seem nice.

Why is it scary or tense and immersive? I'd like to add to his answers that our brain can't tell the difference between realities which is why VR works. To demo this: look up videos with rollercoasters or heights in them. they make you feel things

05: 05 Clearly the questioner isn't talking about the age rating but the description given to some of the ratings. I doubt many are looking a game like Ooo this has comic mischief in it and they drink a beer! Better not buy it!

I'm getting Callisto Protocol day 1. Glenn Schofield is one director in the game's industry who will never be corrupted by greed or the higher ups. He is such a down to earth guy but very very intelligent and creative.

11: 20 for me I think wttg2 is the scariest game ever made. And that's because without a warning the game will jumpscare u which makes the jumpscares wayyy more scarier because it's unexpected and has no build up to it.

Not sure what is going on, and why the obsession with Horror Games, but yeah, there were a significant number of questions about that lol. I thought I would hear more things about VR, metaverses, and all that xD

I've never been a fan of single player games, but God of War on PC changed my mind. Is Elden Ring a good game? It reminds me of Game of Thrones which I hate cause that time era just bores me to death.

I love this. Been talking about creating video games since I was in elementary school, and just started learning the Unity engine (20 years later. I hope to be something like Glen in another 20-30 years.
