Evangelical Christian here, I also DM multiple campaigns with other Evangelical Christians. We don't need to manufacture rage. People who have rage need a structure to assert that rage. We can see this with the atheist/agnostic left in the cult of climate change (not the belief in climate change. belief is important, not the science of climate change. science should be pursued as much as it should be challenged, but the cult of it, theocratic religions, progressive/political Christianity, and so on. This was sort of an unfair assessment and revilement of a group of people that are just folks. A side note: Brennan is one of the best story tellers I've ever listened to, and his character in Candela Obscura was perfection.

I apologize in advance, but I'm going to be a bitter nerd here. I really don't think it was a good idea to bring a person who started with 3e. They really dropped the ball on a lot of things: amongst them, alignment used to be just on one axis (Lawful, Neutral, Chaotic) and that's because of a Poul Anderson's novel; Gygax admitted he didn't really care about Tolkien, and he was mostly a Robert E. Howard or Michael Moorcock kinda guy; and, this is just a pet peeve. but not mentioning the Beholder as the most iconic D&D monster feels kinda wrong, given just how it is D&D's original monster and its been with us since 1975 (and the one featured on Greyhawk's cover still haunts me to this day.

Yes, I do call the fighter warrior and wizard mage.
But in french that's just what their name is: fighter is warrior and wizard is magician.
And in the case of the fighter it makes more sense to me that they would be called warrior instead, since they are often disciplined and that their primary job is battling. Unless there is some nuance I don't understand, anyone can fight, all classes do, all of them are fighters, but for the warrior it is natural, no fright, no dread, just a cool head, a strong grip on your weapon and shield and your friends are enough to win this.

as a broke loser with only broke friends I want to say you ABSOLUTELY DONT NEED ANYTHING TO PLAY DND other than friends and a DM! ANY other resources can be found online, character sheets can be done online, you can roll digital dices, there are so many free resources for everything that both players and DMs alike can use.
If anyone playing is new to dnd feel free to reach out to the community for useful tips and suggestions on resources to use! You don't need the official site, there are alternatives to it as well.

20: 30 I don’t feel this should be aimed just at Dungeon Masters, but all players. It’s should be every player’s responsibility to roll with the failures and keep pushing forward and keep having fun. Of course a failed roll can be really frustrating, especially if it looked like a sure thing and you had something epic planned, but don’t put on a hangdog expression and wait for your DM to make it all better.
To me, the best roll in D&D is a Nat20, but the 2nd best roll in D&D is a Nat1.

The rules explicitly say not to let a player if what they're trying is impossible. Now some dms make 20's a bit more extreme than RAW and 1's as well, but that is also functionally following the rules as a dm controls the results of all rolls. Where this has been a problem on the internet is basically players bullying dms into letting them do things they shouldn't. While the dm should be able to stand up for themself the players are still the ones doing the bad thing here

3: 54 actually kind of bad advice You don't need the three core books at all. They're really expensive! You don't need to spend all that if you're just trying it out! The basic version of the rules for 5e are available for free online on WotC's website. There's enough there to make characters, create dungeons, and have all kinds of adventures if you're just getting started. Alternatively you could get one of the starter box sets, those are only like 30 bucks at target.

For Wild West D&D check out the Iron Kingdoms: Requiem supplements for 5e. The firearm rules and variety, mercenary company rules, new classes and subclasses with guns (Way of the Gun monk, Gun Mage and gunfighter classes, Lone Gun subclass, etc) and all the steampunk/magepunk setting and flavouring really help even if you're not using the IKRPG setting. That said, Ternon Crag and the Bloodstone Marches are very likely what you might be looking for

Why do you have so many dice
Well, because dice luck has an expiration date and recharge timer. They vary between the individual dies and sometimes completed sets.
Sometimes your the D6 in your set is hot, while the others are pure pain. Having multiple sets of dice manages the proper luck algorithm of the universe by appealing to the divine nature of RN-Jeebus and making sacrificial offerings to him for clutch dice rolls.

Wizards aren't really squishy, they have incredible survival if you know how to play them. There are plenty of spells that make them pain in the rear to deal damage to.
Mirror image, Blur, Blink, Absorb elements, misty step.
I remember in my game group there was wizard complaining about how he gets easily killed. I looked at his spell list and was in shocked how little of his good spells he actually used.

rotten_werk You're gonna do fine if you do a session 0. Just have a general outline on how you wanna spin things and keep your cool.
And I'm sure yours can't get any worse than my first Oneshot, because we had to end two rooms before the Dungeon Boss because my best friends mother died. Now that ruins the mood and kinda kills the whole idea of Let's continue some other time

The best Dm's are the ones who try to answer yes whenever possible to questions that begin with Hmm, can I do-
I once asked a DM if I cast a spell on one of our party, instead of the monster which was immune to having spells directed at them, would the splash damage count against the monster and he thought about it for a second and just said try it and find out

1: 58 While I'll admit that Chronomancy IS pretty powerful, here's my counterpoint:
I, a bard, charm the pants off the Chronomancer and get them to join my cause.
Now I control the power of time, through them.
. and will go on to declare myself emperor of the first galactic empire.
Friendship wins!
Flawless victory!

Ah yes. Once great dungeon master that has wasted his time, and contributed to the decline of D&D hanging out with activists and trying to make his entire point in nearly every campaign about surface level anti-capitalism while he supports a capitalist business model and most of his setting have feudal monarchies.

As my party’s fighter/tank, there have been times where I have been carrying around an unconscious wizard. He occasionally decides that he can do melee attacks. The monsters remind him that he cannot, and I am generally left with the responsibility of carrying him around until he wakes up.

You're gettin' to be a bit of a chonkster there bud. Maybe think about doin' a fast or two if you can fit it into your schedule Maybe pick up some weights, or go for a light jog with the lovely wife Please don't have a coronary event before the Intrepid Heroes get to adventuring college

I always try to actively avoid starting in a tavern. A common favourite of mine is all my players have, for their own reasons, joined a travelling caravan heading to the opening location of the campaign. They may well end up in a tavern even during session 1, but of their own choice!

The immovable rod is a crazy item. I tried playing curse if strahd by the book one time and my players found one in the loot table of a vestani wagon. They put it in strahd's coffin so even if he ever game back he would be trapped there with the rod lodged deep in his chest.

A critical role is a position (on a team or party or in a live play podcast, for example) that is important to the point of being almost necessary.
The show uses that name because all 8 of them (including Matt, not He Who Shall Not Be Named) play critical roles.

About D4! There are alternate styles of D4 than the standard pyramid shape! A company called Role4Initiative makes Arch D4s which are kinda like long D6s with 2 sides rounded. They’re nice! Not an ad or anything, I just found them at a convention and like the D4s!
