J. G. Ballard's novel High-Rise was published in 1975. The plot follows the breakdown of a luxury high-rise building as its wealthy occupants tumble into violent mayhem. I'm just listening but I'm at chapter 4 and Wilder being upset that his wife doesn't care that he's cheating on her is really annoying to me. Like why should she care He clearly doesn't care about her anymore if he's going to cheat on her. No wonder why she's depressed and focuses only on her kids.
Im back after Chapter 6. I dislike wilder. His wife wanted to leave the high rise, begging with her actions of indifference toward him and mental state. And he thought he was going to leave her for some actress and go visit his wife and kids whenever it was convenient for him. What a complete and utter tool. [Also, yes the violence is insane and anarchy of what's happening, but I can't say I like many of the characters enough to care. Most certainly don't like Wilder. Cheating asshole. His wife should leave him and take her kids and get out of that hell hole. ]
Edit: at 3: 30: 35. I dislike most of these characters. I think I'm only listening to see how they die or their lives fall apart because that's the only way this story will make me happy at this point. They deserve nothing. I'd have less issue with them if they were the unseelie because then that would make sense their actions. But no. Both Royal and Wilder are cheaters, and Royal is a creep for marrying a woman who's 25 years younger than him. Unless they married when she was 24 I don't see how that's not a man praying on a younger inexperienced woman. He even calls her immature.
Eff these characters.
